Challenging norms and embracing risk have been the keystones of Chris R.’s, Strategy and Transformation Senior Manager for Caterpillar’s Construction Industries Division, career evolution. In his story, he shares what motivates him to pursue new ideas and explains why it’s vital to move past our fear of failure.
Embrace Change and Take Risks
Starting at Caterpillar right out of school, Chris has held ten different positions over 18 years. His primary role involves partnering with the GFSO Global Strategy team to execute strategies and manage internal transformation projects.
When Chris began his career, he believed in following the rules strictly. However, a pivotal moment came when a manager encouraged him to improve processes rather than just follow them. This advice sparked his willingness to take risks, which has been instrumental in his career progression.
The Importance of Risk Acceptance
In today's fast-paced business world, taking calculated risks is essential to stay competitive.
“Risk acceptance is central to the pursuit of new opportunities and innovation. If we don't take risks and try something new, we will fall behind,” says Chris. “Being willing to try something new, while knowing it might fail, is a necessary step to reach the next level – that’s what gets us significant achievements in growth.”
Building Self-Confidence and Vision
Chris attributes his belief in his power to early trust from his leaders and, more recently, to self-confidence and trust in his vision.
“Vision is a big piece of it – you must understand where you want to go and what you want to do. If you don't have that, it's hard to take a risk because you could be all over the place,” says Chris.
Empowering Employees to Make Changes
Chris advises employees to ask their managers about the freedom and boundaries they have for implementing new ideas.
“I've never met a leader who would shy away from hearing a new idea – a way to add insights, gain efficiencies or increase profitability. It's just not who we are,” says Chris.
