Professional Development Programs

Caterpillar's Rotational Development Programs are specifically designed for recent graduates, offering structured rotations across key business areas. These programs provide unique opportunities to explore different roles, gain diverse experience, and build a well-rounded foundation for a successful career.  Candidates may be eligible for multiple programs depending on degree type.

Our Programs

The Engineering Rotational Development Program offers early-career engineers the opportunity to work alongside a global network of over 10,000 professionals, developing innovative products and solutions. Through hands-on rotations, professional summits, and employee resource groups, participants gain valuable experience and expand their networks.  We foster a culture of continuous learning by investing in a range of programs and learning tools, providing employees with meaningful work and offering an inclusive environment. These actions empower employees to develop the skills they need to thrive at every stage of their careers. The program supports a wide range of engineering disciplines, including but not limited to computer, software, electrical, mechanical, welding, materials, and metallurgical.

Engineering Rotational Development Programs:

  • Product Development: Includes design, validation, simulation, and product support engineers working in research and development, new product introduction, and continuous improvement.  Bachelor’s Degree or higher in: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering (fluid dynamics or structural focus), Agricultural Engineering (powertrain focus), Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Software Engineering.
  • Materials Engineering: Focuses on materials technologies and processes related to metallic, ceramic, and nonmetallic components, fabrications, and assemblies.  Bachelor's Degree or higher in: Materials Engineering discipline (e.g. Metallurgical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Mat Sci & Eng, etc.).
  • Welding Engineering: Focuses on design, failure analysis, manufacturing support, automation, quality control, research and development, purchasing, remanufacturing, and product support.  Bachelor's degree in (preferred, but not limited to): Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Materials Science.

Length of Program: 12 months to 3 years 

Requirements: GPA 3.0 on 4.0 scale (without rounding); Bachelor’s Degree

The Caterpillar Field Representative Development Program offers early-career professionals the chance to work closely with internal Caterpillar teams, Cat Dealers and customers, gaining hands-on experience and building meaningful relationships through intentional rotational work.

Your journey in the Field Rep Development program begins with 13 weeks of developmental experience, including presentations, training, workshops, and exposure to all parts of the Caterpillar business. This initial phase is followed by rotations (1-3 years) within the business unit to which participants are hired. In this program, you become part of a global, value-driven team focused on customer success and professional growth. 

As a Field Representative, you will help deliver impactful solutions that support customers in building a better world. This comprehensive program not only enhances technical and professional skills but also fosters a deep understanding of Caterpillar's operations and values, preparing you for a successful career within the company.

Caterpillar Field Representatives come from a wide range of disciplines including, but not limited to, engineering, business operations, marketing & sales.

Length of Program:  1-3 years

The Finance Leadership Development Program (FLDP) is a U.S.-based entry-level program designed to build future finance and treasury leaders through three rotations of increasing responsibility. Participants gain diverse experience across key finance functions, benefit from mentorship, and develop core competencies in finance, data, leadership, and Caterpillar products. The program also includes networking events, facility tours, and curated development opportunities in locations such as Peoria, IL; Irving, TX; and Nashville, TN.

Program: 

Prepares individuals to become future industry leaders through finance-focused roles (cash management, corporate funding, corporate insurance, employee benefit funds, foreign exchange/commodities, investor relations, supplier finance, treasury technology, and Caterpillar Financial Treasury). Participants will rotate through various finance positions, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the field and developing their leadership skills. 

Length of Program: Three 9-24 month rotations.

Requirements: GPA 3.0 on 4.0 scale (both finance and cumulative GPA); Finance, economics, or other business or technology major with a minimum of 18 hours of finance courses. 

Caterpillar’s Information Technology Development Program offers recent graduates three one-year rotations designed to build both technical expertise and leadership capabilities. Participants gain hands-on experience across various business areas while expanding their professional networks. This program helps develop well-rounded IT professionals ready to drive innovation.

Program:

Focuses on understanding customer needs and delivering responsive IT solutions with operational excellence. Participants will gain experience in various IT roles and develop skills to become future leaders in the field. 

Length of Program: 3 years (one-year rotations) 

Requirements: GPA 3.0 on 4.0 scale (without rounding); Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or an IT-related degree.

The Leadership and Technical Development Program (LTDP) offers early-career engineers and business professionals the opportunity to step into a world where iron meets technology and ingenuity comes to life. Be at the forefront of a global leader in manufacturing, ensuring our products are delivered safely at the highest quality to be used by our customers around the world. Experience hands-on rotations in a culture of continuous learning. Leverage and refine your technical skills to solve problems. Develop leadership and relationship management capabilities, and build a strong foundation for long-term success. The program leverages a range of technical skills and degrees alongside business acumen providing you with meaningful work in manufacturing engineering, operations leadership, procurement, automation, supply chain, and environmental, health & safety.

Leadership and Technical Development Programs:

  • Procurement: focused on building technical capabilities for managing Caterpillar's Supplier Relationship, Sourcing Strategy and Supply Chain Integration through a variety of procurement roles like category buyer, supplier development engineer, data analytics and other relevant positions.  Bachelor's or Master’s degree in: Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Operations Management, or Business Administration.
  • Operations Leadership: focused on building technical capabilities for managing Caterpillar's Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, and Supply Chain function through roles in manufacturing engineering, operations supervision, supply chain, and other relevant positions. Bachelor's degree in (preferred, but not limited to): Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Operations Management.
  • Supply Chain Management: focused on building technical capabilities for managing Caterpillar's Supply Chain function through roles in production scheduling, demand and orders management, logistics planning, inventory management, packaging, purchasing. Bachelor's degree in (preferred, but not limited to): Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Industrial Engineering.
  • Environmental, Health & Safety: focused on building technical capabilities for EHS compliance, project management, culture transformation, and facility sustainability. Bachelor's degree in (preferred, but not limited to): Environmental engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, and safety management.

Length of Program: 3 years with a 2-3 year assignment post-program

Requirements: GPA 2.8 on 4.0 scale (without rounding); Bachelor’s Degree
