Thinking about applying for a role in one of our manufacturing facilities? Whether you're applying for your first job or looking to grow your career, here’s what you need to know to walk into your interview with confidence.
What to Expect
Production interviews at Caterpillar are designed to be straightforward and focused on your experience. You may meet with one or two interviewers and be asked to share examples of how you've handled tasks, solved problems, or worked with others. What matters most is your story – your ability to talk about your work, your skills and how you approach challenges.
Use the STAR Format
Caterpillar uses a behavioral interview style called STAR. It’s a simple way to structure your answers:
- Situation – What was going on?
- Task – What needed to be done?
- Action – What did you do?
- Result – What happened because of your actions?
You can find more information about this format here.
How to Prepare
Before your interview, think of a few examples from your work or life that show how you’ve solved problems, worked safely, or helped a team. Practice telling those stories using STAR. It helps you stay focused and clear.
Use these suggestions to boost your confidence in an interview:
- Review the job description and compare it to your own experiences:
- Think about jobs you've had (even if they weren't in manufacturing)
- Think about skills you've built or certification or training you've completed
- Think about what tools and equipment you have used
- Write down STAR examples based your experiences:
- How you've prioritized safety in your work and life
- Times you've taken initiative or learned something new
- How you handle attention to detail
- Practice sharing your examples in the STAR format with a friend. Be sure to focus on what you did—interviewers are interested in your personal contributions, so use "I" instead of "we" to highlight your role.
- If possible, bring a copy of your resume or certifications (or just jot the info down on paper to help you stay organized)
- Show up professionally: Arrive on time, dress professionally (business casual is great), and communicate clearly. A positive attitude and thoughtful responses go a long way!
Ask Questions
Remember, you’re interviewing Caterpillar too. Ask about the team, the shift schedule, safety practices, or what a typical day looks like. It shows you’re serious and helps you decide if the role is right for you.
