Mastering Work-Life Balance: Insights from a Caterpillar Leader

After 26 years at Caterpillar, Brian T., Division CFO for Caterpillar IT, has learned that achieving work-life balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about intentional choices. Here’s how Brian makes it work and what you can learn from his approach.

Start with What Matters Most

Brian’s career spans decades, but his priorities remain clear: family first. Married for nearly 25 years with three children, he makes time for family dinners, games, vacations and conversations about the highs and lows of each day.

Set Boundaries and Stick to Them

Work-life balance isn’t static. Brian blocks time on his calendar daily for exercise and personal catch-up. When he’s on vacation, notifications are off. This simple habit helps him recharge without guilt.

Stress happens. For Brian, the solution is movement and rest. “If I’m stuck on an issue, I take a walk or get a full night’s sleep,” he shares. He also listens to music (sometimes singing along!) or calls family to shake off a tough day.

Stay Curious and Make Time to Learn

Brian’s go-to hobby? Reading. From audiobooks to comics, he aims for a chapter a day. Lifelong learning keeps him energized.

Communicate Expectations Often

One of Brian’s most valuable tips: keep the conversation around work-life balance going. “Work-life balance is typically a highly individual and personal choice that will likely change year to year and sometimes week to week depending on what’s going on. I would encourage everyone to regularly check in with your team, manager, and those in your personal life so people know what’s on your agenda and generally what to expect from you,” he says.

Work-Life balance isn’t a one-size-fits-all, but with intentional habits and open communication, you can create a rhythm that works for you.
