Evergreen Skills That Never Lose Value In The Age Of AI

The world of work is evolving faster than ever and staying relevant means more than just keeping up with technology. As James reflects on completing 21 years at Caterpillar, one thing is clear: when he started his career, neither the role nor the world looked like it does today. And that’s exactly the point. Embracing change, challenges, and opportunities with a strong work ethic can open doors you never imagined.

James began his journey at Caterpillar in 2004 under a marketing rotational program.  As his career progressed across Marketing and Sales, he had the opportunity to work closely with dealers and customers around the world. Every interaction brought a new perspective and, more importantly, a deeper understanding of what customers truly need to operate effectively, efficiently, and successfully.

After leading the Field Representative Program for nearly six years and empowering hundreds of marketing professionals, James continues his journey today as a Senior Account Manager based in Australia. Along the way, one belief has remained constant: “while roles may change, some skills never lose their value. Especially in the age of AI.”

Here are some evergreen skills James believes will always matter:

Innovative thinking: While technology can connect existing dots, human creativity is what discovers new ones. Unique perspectives and original thinking unlock opportunities that algorithms alone can’t.

Soft skills & communication: The tools we use to connect may evolve, but the importance of empathy, trust, and authentic relationships never changes. People still connect with people.

Presentation & influence: Influence comes from knowing when to lean on data and facts — and when to tell a compelling story. The right balance creates an impact.

Continuous improvement: Every challenge is a learning opportunity. Growth happens when experience is combined with curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to fill the gaps.

Adapting to technology: In an AIenabled world, the key is to focus on the work that truly matters. Learn to work with technology — and add value in ways AI cannot.

“While technical competencies remain essential, it’s these evergreen skills that truly take you across the finish line”
