Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Provide enterprise-wide competitive intelligence and strategic decision support that enables Caterpillar business units to improve competitive position, pricing effectiveness, and long-term growth. The role operates at the intersection of aftermarket, technology, and strategy, partnering with senior leaders to translate competitive dynamics and market signals into actionable insights across all Caterpillar verticals.

What you will do:

  • Deliver enterprise and division-level competitive intelligence across aftermarket services, components, remanufacturing/rebuilding, and digital aftermarket enablement supporting Construction Industries, Resource Industries, Power & Energy, Enterprise Strategy, and Digital/Technology/Distribution.
  • Identify competitive threats, opportunities, and structural shifts across markets and technologies and define and execute processes for internal and external competitive investigations, including competitor positioning, distribution strategies, channels, and financial benchmarking.
  • Provide insights on industry structure, market segments, growth rates, customer buying criteria, product and service differentiation, competitor cost drivers, and company strengths and weaknesses.
  • Distill industry news, supplier activity, and competitor messaging into concise, executive-ready insights.
  • Guide assessments of global and regional competitive position to inform strategy, operations, product design, sourcing, pricing, distribution, and promotion decisions.
  • Develop and maintain a global intelligence network (external and internal) to maintain a steady flow of strategic and operational competitive information while staying up to date in internal developments and priorities.
  • Deliver a quarterly aftermarket landscape research report based on in-depth analysis of public and private competitors impacting the aftermarket space, leveraging primary and secondary research of company financials and strategic moves, trade show attendance, and much more.
  • Deliver a quarterly aftermarket pricing report, supporting the ESD aftermarket pricing team.
  • Deliver a quarterly component dashboard supporting quarterly business reviews for division CFOs
  • Address ad hoc strategic research requests, including deep-dive benchmarking and competitive studies for senior leadership up to and including the Executive Office and Board of Directors, leading multi-functional project teams through competitive analysis, strategic positioning, diagnostic assessment, and solution definition.
  • Serve as a thought partner to senior leaders, leveraging ongoing research and analysis, to anticipate competitive risks with early warning signals, and identify opportunities aligned with Caterpillar’s enterprise growth pillars. Support these high level strategic decisionmakers on topics such as pricing posture, capability gaps, enabling technologies, and external competitive forces.

What you will bring:

  • Education/Experience: Degree in Engineering, Business, Accounting or similar from an accredited college or university. Preferably complimented by an MBA or equivalent; 6+ years of extensive experience in one or more operational areas related to the aftermarket focus of this role
  • Competitive Environment: Knowledge of business market concepts and principles; ability to utilize the processes, tools and techniques for gathering, analyzing, and communicating information about the competitive environment.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Interpersonal Relationships: Knowledge of the techniques and the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Financial Analysis: Knowledge of tools and approaches of financial analysis; ability to read, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from financial and numerical material.

What will set you apart:

  • Highly analytical and persistent with the ability to develop unorthodox hypothesis, drawing insight from diverse sources and broad/ambiguous data sets
  • Extensive financial analysis, competitive environment, market research and business analysis skills
  • Must be an excellent multi-tasker and extremely efficient gathering and interpreting information while working on tight timelines. Must be able to identify and prioritize the most urgent needs and apply focus and attention accordingly.
  • Strong desire to continually upgrade your knowledge base and improve skills proactively
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with an extensive network of business contacts both internal to the company, and external within the industry.
  • Ability to travel to trade shows and other industry events and leverage the information and contacts to support key internal customers.
  • Must have the ability to command respect of managers of all levels including senior leadership and properly communicate using exceptional oral and presentation skills
