Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

What you will do:

As an Engine Performance Engineer, you are accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Defining engine performance requirements including torque and power characteristics, lug performance, transient response, fuel consumption targets, and altitude and ambient operating requirements for machine applications.
  • Supporting engine and aftertreatment system integration activities across new product development programs and machine platforms.
  • Collaborating with engine supplier, global engine systems team, suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver optimized machine performance and emissions compliance.
  • Analysing engine, aftertreatment, machine, and field operational data to identify performance trends, emerging issues, and improvement opportunities.
  • Supporting implementation of current and future emissions regulations by translating regulatory requirements into engineering and validation requirements.
  • Monitoring early-life product performance and utilizing connected machine data to assess product behaviour, identify risks, and support issue resolution.
  • Investigating performance-related concerns involving power delivery, fuel economy, thermal management, derates, aftertreatment operation, cold ambient conditions, and high-altitude performance.
  • Developing analytical tools, dashboards, and reports that support engineering decisions and data-driven prioritization.
  • Partnering with engine supplier, product groups, and validation teams to develop corrective actions and long-term solutions for performance-related issues.
  • Serving as a technical resource within Engine Systems for performance, emissions, and machine integration topics.

Degree Requirement

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering

What You Can Demonstrate:

Level: Extensive Experience

Level Basic Understanding:

  • Engine Performance & Integration: Ability to define engine performance requirements and evaluate engine and aftertreatment system behaviour within machine applications. Understanding of performance trade-offs involving productivity, fuel efficiency, emissions compliance, thermal management, and customer expectations.
  • Data Analytics & Performance Assessment: Ability to interpret engine, machine, test, and field operational data to identify trends, detect emerging issues, and provide engineering recommendations that improve product performance and reliability.

Level: Working Knowledge

  • Problem Solving: Ability to apply structured problem-solving techniques to investigate engine and machine performance concerns, identify root causes, evaluate corrective actions, and support implementation of sustainable solutions.
  • Communicating Complex Concepts: Ability to communicate technical performance, emissions, and system integration topics clearly to cross-functional teams, product groups, validation organizations, and global stakeholders.
  • Emissions & Regulatory Compliance: Working knowledge of off-highway emissions regulations and their impact on engine performance, machine integration, validation, and product compliance activities.
  • Systems Integration: Understanding of interactions between engine, aftertreatment, cooling, hydraulic, powertrain, and control systems, and their influence on overall machine performance.

What You May Have:

  • Experience working with diesel engines, aftertreatment systems, or powertrain integration within off-highway applications.
  • Skills with Vector Canape & Canalyzer, service & programming tools & data loggers.
  • Support In Process Validation and Hot Test on the Assembly Line.
  • Update/track software revisions on Prove Design/Pilot machine fleet.
  • Knowledge of connected machine analytics and data visualization tools such as Power BI, Python, JMP, MATLAB, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting early-life product monitoring, field performance investigations, and issue resolution activities.
  • Familiarity with engine electronic controls, CAN communication, and performance validation processes.
  • Experience supporting global product development programs and collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to balance product performance, emissions compliance, quality, cost, timing, and risk considerations when making engineering recommendations.
