ProcurementJob Description:
Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
As a Manager Procurement, supporting RISM’s Assurance of Supply Capacity and Demand, you will lead highly visible, enterprise-wide efforts focused on assurance of supply, supplier constraints, and control tower execution. You will serve as a leader for control tower experts, bringing together Procurement, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Engineering, suppliers, and other stakeholders to resolve urgent constraints while minimizing disruption to Caterpillar customers.
Success in this role requires someone who can bring order to complexity. You will manage a portfolio of supplier and supply challenges, consolidate large volumes of information into clear priorities, facilitate decisions across a matrixed organization, and lead through influence when the answer is not always easy. Just as importantly, you will help the organization move beyond reacting to supply issues toward earlier identification, escalation, prevention, and proactive supplier risk management.
What you will do:
- Lead assurance-of-supply and control tower execution: Coordinate a portfolio of urgent and emerging supplier constraints, ensuring the right stakeholders are connected, priorities are understood, and actions move forward with urgency.
- Lead through influence: Provide leadership and direction to control tower leads and cross-functional stakeholders across the enterprise, fostering collaboration and alignment without relying solely on formal reporting relationships.
- Build a more proactive operating model: Identify trends and recurring issues across control towers and use those insights to improve processes, escalation mechanisms, supplier management, and assurance-of-supply strategies.
- Drive disciplined execution: Apply strong project and program management practices to maintain visibility to actions, owners, dependencies, escalations, decisions, and risks across multiple concurrent supply issues.
- Manage complex supplier challenges: Bring structure to ambiguous, fast-moving situations involving multiple suppliers, facilities, procurement teams, and business stakeholders. Make or facilitate difficult decisions when competing priorities require trade-offs.
- Apply procurement expertise: Support high-impact purchasing and supplier decisions, including supplier qualification, market analysis, negotiation, supplier quality, supplier delivery, and issue resolution.
- Drive enterprise-wide collaboration: Facilitate collaboration across Procurement, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and other functions to resolve supplier constraints and minimize downstream customer impact.
What skills you have:
- Category Management: Knowledge of category management and the ability to use spend analysis, market analysis, procurement data, goals, and KPIs to support effective procurement decisions.
- Supplier Management – MFG: Knowledge of supplier-management processes and the ability to effectively manage relationships and transactions with manufacturing suppliers. You will apply supplier-management practices to investigate alternatives, resolve supplier issues, facilitate supplier decisions, and ensure purchases meet delivery and quality requirements.
- Purchasing Tasks and Activities: Extensive knowledge of purchasing policies, processes, technologies, and practices with demonstrated ability to manage complex purchasing activities and solve difficult procurement problems.
- Effective Communications: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex information, clearly communicate priorities and decisions, listen to multiple perspectives, and adjust communication for different audiences.
Top candidates will also have:
- Complex project and program leadership: Demonstrated success leading complex, high-visibility initiatives with multiple workstreams, competing priorities, dependencies, and stakeholders. Able to organize significant amounts of detail, separate signal from noise, and turn ambiguity into clear priorities and actions.
- Leadership through influence: Proven ability to mobilize teams, facilitate difficult decisions, and drive outcomes across a matrixed organization, including situations where direct reporting authority does not exist.
- Assurance of supply experience: Experience managing supplier constraints, capacity challenges, shortages, delivery issues, material availability, supplier recovery, or other supply-continuity risks in a manufacturing environment.
- Procurement and sourcing experience: Experience in category procurement, strategic sourcing, site purchasing, facility procurement, manufacturing procurement, supplier management, or a related purchasing environment.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Strong ability to build alignment across Procurement, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and other business functions while balancing competing enterprise priorities.
- Supplier performance and problem solving: Experience working directly with suppliers to resolve complex quality, delivery, capacity, or performance issues while identifying root causes and developing sustainable corrective actions.
- Proactive risk management: Ability to recognize patterns across supplier challenges and translate them into longer-term mitigation strategies, helping shift the organization from reactive issue resolution toward earlier identification and prevention of supply risks.
- Executive-ready communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to consolidate complex information, clearly articulate risks and recommendations, and tailor messages to suppliers, business partners, and senior leaders.
- People leadership: Previous people-leadership experience is preferred, but demonstrated success leading complex projects, influencing stakeholders, and driving results through others is highly valued.
