Job Title: Metallurgical/Materials Engineering Specialist
Salary: £66,000 + (depending on experience)
Location: Peterborough, UK

The Opportunity
Full-time opportunity for a skilled Metallurgical/Materials Engineer to join our team in Peterborough.
In this role, you will provide materials engineering support to all of Caterpillar’s UK/Europe facilities, which drives involvement in investigating a wide range of differing materials within multiple applications
Whilst this is a technical role, you will also be required to build collaborative partnerships across the Caterpillar UK facilities to provide feedback and insights to both internal and external audiences.
What you will do:
As a Metallurgical / Materials Engineer within Caterpillar you will:
- Partner with and provide technical guidance to other teams.
- Integrate components and materials, aligning with compliance and specification requirements.
- Gather relevant information, compare, and contrast data; identify relationships to support and assist in prediction and identification of failures.
- Provide results and assessment back into the business; potentially being an impactful output that may affect the work group or project team, suppliers, multiple units, and both internal and external customers. This insight will have significant impact on warranty, total cost of non-quality, customer perception, costs, sales, and the leveraging of technology.
What You Have
Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:
- Materials Science/Metallurgy degree and/or substantive practical working experience within a materials laboratory environment
- Metallurgical / materials evaluation of new products, processes, or systems
- Engaging communicator; able to convey technical assessments and results to both technical and non-technical colleagues
- Providing technical guidance on product and process maintenance
- Ability to identify metallurgical / materials manufacturing defects and make process improvement recommendations
Candidates may have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:
- Experience of working in an ISO17025 Accredited Laboratory
- Significant experience of cast foundry processes
- Experience of steel making processes
Product Testing: Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.
Level Expert:
• Predicts industry and marketplace trends; explores new methods and technologies.
• Leads the evaluation, selection, and implementation of testing approaches, tools and scenarios.
• Mentors others in improving the throughput and efficiency of the manufacturing test processes.
• Oversees the testing processes of multiple products in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
• Consults on product-testing costs, tools, approaches and benefits.
• Directs the development of standards, guidelines and best practices for testing.
Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.
Level Extensive Experience:
• Evaluates business impact of failure and the criticality and timing of needed resolution.
• Resolves difficult or high-impact equipment and systems problems.
• Monitors machine performance and history; addresses excessive maintenance or repair needs.
• Coaches others how to resolve integration or communications problems in multi-vendor environment.
• Applies specific techniques for isolating a problem and defining resolution approach.
• Uses advanced diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems.
Additional information:
- This role has up to 10% travel mainly EU
- This role is based in the Peterborough office 5 days a week
