Part Time Intern – Experimental Mechanic

Role Description

As a Research and Experimental Mechanic at Caterpillar Inc., you will continuously improve process efficiency by performing the assembling, fitting, and adjusting and/or dismantling required in the construction or disassembly of experimental engines. Individuals will work on experimental, pre-production, post production and legacy engines that range in size from 4.0 L to 340 L.

What you will do:

  • Engineering theory and design
  • Work from Pro-E models, VisView models, blueprints and verbal instructions
  • Assist install builds in various stages on both gaseous fuel and diesel type engines
  • Fitting for cooling, air, hydraulic connections, and wiring harnesses for adaptation of the test device to the test machine
  • Installing necessary test leads, thermocouples, cylinder pressure pick-up gauges, and instrumented test components as required performing the test
  • Perform adjustments on valve train, gear train, fuel system, cooling system, and oil system
  • Assembly of entire unit of a new design or the buildup of subassemblies
  • Aid in the fabrication of intake and exhaust piping, instrumented fuel and cooling lines, and modified wiring harnesses
  • Incorporating improvements and developments in present production models
  • Evaluate and determine reusability of engine hardware during engine builds
  • Uses various precision gauging tools to check accuracy of assembly and fitting operations.
  • Plans method and sequence of assembly
  • Install and remove engines from a testing cell
  • Uses all common mechanic's hand tools, portable power tools, power presses, simple machines tools, and powered crane to assemble parts into complete unit, making alterations and hand fitting parts when necessary
  • Makes suggestions concerning methods of overcoming difficulties encountered in assembly/disassembly and reasons for parts failure
  • Initiate possible changes in design to correct failure, and any other pertinent criticisms or data gained while performing assembly/disassembly or dismantling or construction

Education and Experience Requirement

  • Degree in progress or completed.

Skills You Will Have:

  • Product Engineering: Basic knowledge of various product engineering techniques; ability to master professional methods to design, build and process hardware products or components.
  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Basic knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.

Summary Pay Range:

$25.00 - $43.00

Intern Hourly Rate:

An intern's hourly rate is based on the major/degree being pursued and the number of completed academic hours achieved before the start of the internship.
