Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled IS Specialist -Senior Data Modeler to join India CoE-Integration & Engg -CAT IT Division
We are seeking a Senior Data Modeler to serve as the architectural steward of the Caterpillar Financial Insurance Services (CFIS) Snowflake data warehouse. This role is the connective tissue between insurance business leaders, source-system SMEs, ETL engineers, BI developers, and AI/analytics platforms — translating complex insurance business processes into governed, scalable, business-friendly data models that power certified reporting, self-service analytics, Snowflake Intelligence, and downstream AI agents. The ideal candidate combines deep technical modeling craft with relentless curiosity about how insurance data is actually created, moved, and consumed — someone who won't stop at "what the source system sends" but instead digs in with policy administration, claims, actuarial, and underwriting to understand why the data looks the way it does, and how it should be shaped to answer the business's most important questions.
The preference for this role is to be based out of Bangalore – Caterpillar PSN
What you will do
- End-to-End Data Modeling & Data Product Ownership: Lead the full data modeling lifecycle for the CFIS Snowflake warehouse — from business requirements discovery, conceptual → logical → physical design, entity-relationship mapping, dimensional modeling (Kimball star/snowflake schemas, conformed dimensions, slowly changing dimensions), through iterative validation. Own the models as data products with clear consumers, SLAs, and lifecycle governance in collaboration with onshore data modelers.
- Investigative Source-System Analysis (Curiosity in Action): Serve as the team's most curious mind when it comes to bringing in data from source systems. This role requires actively digging into CFIS-specific insurance, broader Caterpillar systems, and external sources. You'll partner with source-system owners and business SMEs to understand data lineage, business rules, edge cases, and historical anomalies before proposing how the data should be modeled — not just consuming feeds as-is.
- Insurance Business Fluency & Stakeholder Engagement: Build and continuously deepen your knowledge of insurance business processes — policy lifecycle, premium calculation and earning patterns, physical damage vs. extended protection product lines, claims adjudication and reserving, loss ratios, and actuarial reserving concepts. Directly engage insurance business leadership — including CFIS product managers, actuarial, claims, underwriting, and Insurance Services executives — to understand data requirements, translate business questions into modeling decisions, and validate that certified data sources reflect real-world business intent.
- Snowflake-Native Modeling & Semantic Layer Design: Design models that leverage Snowflake's architecture — clustering keys, micro-partitioning, materialized views, dynamic tables, transient/temporary tables, zero-copy cloning, and secure data sharing — for query performance, storage efficiency, and cost-aware scalability. Own the certified semantic layer on top of the warehouse that powers Power BI dashboards, Snowflake Semantic Views, Snowflake Intelligence, and Streamlit apps.
- Metric, Grain & Business Glossary Stewardship: Define and document business metrics, measures, and grain at each layer of the model (raw → conformed → presentation → semantic). Own CFIS business glossary alignment, ensuring metrics like "written premium," "earned premium," "incurred loss," "loss ratio," and "policy count" have single, certified definitions that hold across Power BI, Snowflake Intelligence, and AI agent consumption.
- Governance, Standards & Documentation: Establish and enforce modeling standards — naming conventions, surrogate/natural key strategies, reference data management, data classification (PII/PHI-sensitive claims data), and end-to-end lineage documentation. Champion data contracts between source systems and the warehouse to reduce silent breakage.
- Data Quality, Integrity & Reconciliation: Embed validation rules, referential integrity checks, and completeness/consistency expectations into model designs. Partner with ETL developers and data stewards to identify and resolve upstream data quality issues rather than masking them at the reporting layer.
- Matillion ETL/ELT Alignment: Collaborate closely with the ETL team to ensure modeling decisions align with pipeline implementation. Advise on tradeoffs between normalization, denormalization, and performance — balancing model integrity with practical load, refresh, and incremental-merge patterns.
- Offshore Delivery & Cross-Team Collaboration: Operate effectively in an offshore delivery model, partnering daily with onshore architecture, ETL developers, team leads, BI developers, BAs, PMs, and insurance business leadership in Nashville, TN. Coordinate with other data modelers to share reusable modeling patterns and ensure consistent definitions across domains — policy administration, claims, premium, dealer solutions, pricing, and reinsurance.
- Scalability & Forward-Looking Architecture: Proactively evaluate model designs for scalability as new data sources, business domains, and AI/self-service use cases emerge. Recommend refactoring or extension strategies that preserve backward compatibility while enabling growth (e.g., preparing for Snowflake Semantic Views, Cortex Analyst, AI integrations).
- Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Mentor junior modelers, ETL developers, and BI developers on dimensional modeling craft and insurance domain knowledge. Participate in CAB reviews, contribute to weekly release notes, maintain model documentation, and support onboarding of new team members.
What you will have
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or data modeling, with at least 4 years in a dedicated data modeler or data architect role
- Expert-level proficiency in dimensional modeling (Kimball methodology), entity-relationship modeling, and hybrid approaches (Data Vault familiarity a plus)
- 3+ years hands-on with Snowflake — schema design, clustering strategies, performance tuning, secure data sharing, and Snowflake-native features
- Advanced SQL skills — ability to profile, validate, and troubleshoot data at scale across complex joins and business logic
- Demonstrated ability to engage business leaders — translating ambiguous business questions into concrete modeling decisions and communicating tradeoffs in business-friendly language
- Strong investigative mindset — comfort digging into source systems, tracing data lineage, and asking "why does the data look this way?" before designing solutions
- Excellent written and verbal communication — able to produce clear model documentation, business glossary entries, and executive-facing decision briefs
- Proven ability to work effectively in an offshore delivery model, collaborating daily with onshore architecture, ETL, and business teams across time zones
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Preferred
- Insurance or financial services data background — particularly with policy administration, claims, premium, actuarial, or financial reporting data
- Familiarity with Matillion ETL/ELT and understanding of how modeling decisions impact pipeline design and orchestration
- Experience with Power BI semantic models, DAX, and how modeling decisions flow through to dashboard consumption
- Exposure to Snowflake Cortex AI, Snowflake Intelligence / Polaris AI, or AI-ready semantic view design — including experience preparing data for natural language query and AI agent consumption
- Familiarity with data governance frameworks (data classification, masking policies, row access policies), metadata management, and Snowflake lineage tools
- Experience with Git version control, CI/CD for data warehouse artifacts, and environment management (dev/test/prod)
- Snowflake certifications (SnowPro Core, SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer or Architect)
- Familiarity with insurance-specific concepts: written vs. earned premium, IBNR, loss development, subrogation, reinsurance, physical damage vs. extended protection product lines
ted - This position requires candidate to work a 5-day -a -week schedule in the office.
