We are looking for a dynamic, organized self-starter to join our Product Support and Logistics Division as a Packaging Engineer in Morton, IL.

Job Summary:

  • This position will report directly to the North America Regional Packaging Manager. This Packaging Engineer will be responsible for a wide array of projects and initiatives within the Packaging Design and Solutions (PD&S) team spanning the Enterprise and many business units globally. The PD&S team designs and develops returnable and expendable packaging for individual piece parts and bulk shipping to ensure the timely and efficient receipt and delivery of material at the lowest total cost of ownership. Proper packaging design includes part containment, protection, and optimization of transportation and other supply network functions. This engineer will spearhead projects based on opportunities uncovered personally through their own analysis, through the experience of others on the team, or identified by suppliers and customers.

  • This role is 100% on-site with no opportunity for hybrid or remote schedules
  • This role requires up to 25% domestic and international travel

What You Will Do:

  • Lead simple to complex projects across all functional areas including supply chain, purchasing, operations, manufacturing engineering, quality, and product group (design engineering, product support, NPI/NSI team)
  • Organize and execute Wall-to-Wall facility packaging assessments to identify packaging opportunities that will reduce packaging cost, improve quality, reduce cost of poor quality, improve transportation & warehouse efficiencies, and improve lead time throughout the network. You will be responsible for developing multiyear project plan while balancing customer prioritization and Enterprise value
  • Deploy PD&S New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Source Introduction (NSI) packaging best practices to facilities and product groups
  • Refine the analytics and tools used to identify new or improved containerization opportunities at CAT facilities for improved pack density
  • Record and consider detailed customer requirements, constraints, and assumptions of stakeholders in project planning for thorough and effective project execution
  • Build team cohesiveness, leading, mentoring, training, and motivating
  • Create packaging concepts using 3D modeling software (e.g. CREO, SolidWorks)

What You Have (Required Skills):

  • Packaging: Knowledge of packaging tools, approaches and practices; ability to package products and components safely and attractively.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.

  • Collaborating: Knowledge of collaborative techniques; ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Packaging, Chemical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology
  • 5+ years of relevant job experience; in lieu of preferred degrees, a minimum of 10+ years of supply chain or operations experience with analytics background
  • Ability to perform data query analysis (e.g. SQL, Python, SAS)
  • Capable of working and communicating with a variety of company and supplier personnel

Summary Pay Range:

$112,710.00 - $169,060.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
