Machining Technologist - Skilled Trades Machinist
This position is a skilled-trades machinist role supporting the Caterpillar Fabrication Shop at the Tech Center in Mossville, IL. This position sets up, operates, and optimizes a wide range of precision machining equipment to fabricate complex components, tooling, and experimental parts. Supports research, design validation, and manufacturing process development by independently determining machining methods, improvising setups, and producing high-precision parts without established procedures.

This job is classified as a UAW position.
The primary work location for this role is Mossville, IL - Tech Center, with a requirement to work on-site full-time at a Caterpillar facility.
Sponsorship is not available for this position.
This role might require 5% travel (local buildings and to Proving Grounds).
What You Will Do
Set up, operate, and express proficient knowledge in regards to advanced milling machines, specifically programming, writing, and editing G Codes.
Determine machining methods, sequences, and setups, including calculations required for tooling, feeds, speeds, and tolerances.
Independently interpret blueprints and specifications to produce intricate parts without predefined processes.
Fabricate dies, jigs, fixtures, tooling, repair parts, and experimental or prove-design components.
Develop and improvise complex machine setups, tooling, and fixturing for non-standard or prototype work.
Lay out complex parts, plan machining, and hand-fitting procedures for precision assembly.
Perform bench work as required, including scraping, filing, lapping, and precision fitting using specialized tools and gauging instruments.
Apply advanced mathematics and trigonometry to support machining accuracy and process development.
Evaluate machining results to determine feasibility for production and manufacturability.
Collaborate with process engineers to support manufacturing improvements, tooling optimization, and new material development.
Lead or support the fabrication of experimental components from concept through completion to validate engineering designs.
Provide guidance and operating instructions to others, assisting in resolving complex machining and process challenges.
Skills & Competencies
Precision Machining Expertise – Deep knowledge of CNC and manual machining, tooling, and material behavior.
Technical Problem Solving – Ability to independently troubleshoot complex machining and setup issues.
Blueprint Interpretation – Advanced ability to work directly from prints, models, and specifications without standard work.
Process Development – Experience developing machining processes for prototypes and new materials.
Tooling & Fixturing – Strong capability to design or improvise tooling solutions.
Mathematical Application – Proficiency in advanced shop math, geometry, and trigonometry.
Attention to Detail – High precision mindset with strict adherence to tolerances and specifications.
Collaboration – Ability to consult with engineers and mentor other machinists or operators.
Top Candidates will also have:
Technical Degree from an accredited two-year or four-year educational program within skilled trades.
Working knowledge and experience setting up and operating advanced machining equipment including lathes, boring mills, grinders, EDMs, and specialty machining systems to perform precision operations.
Extensive experience operating and setting up precision machining equipment in a tool room, R&D, or prototype environment.
Proven ability to independently plan and execute complex machining operations.
Strong background in blueprint reading, precision measurement, and tolerance control.
Experience supporting prototype, experimental, or low-volume production work.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical machining issues.
Summary Pay Range:
$35.81 - $38.49Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
