Job Summary
Caterpillar is seeking a Senior Facilities Project Engineer in Sanford, North Carolina, to lead the integration and delivery of the facility systems required to bring a new advanced manufacturing site safely from design through production readiness. The role will focus on campus construction and facilities-related capital projects to support operations. This role coordinates electrical, mechanical, civil, building-control, and manufacturing interfaces while managing integrated scope, schedule, cost, quality, and risk.
You will work within the Facilities Engineering Team, which provides technical expertise and project leadership for facilities-related initiatives. You will manage system interfaces and dependencies, resolve ownership gaps, and ensure that design and execution decisions support the facility. You may bring deep expertise in one engineering discipline, but you must be able to challenge assumptions, evaluate trade-offs, and make sound decisions across disciplines.
You will manage facilities related initiatives in areas such as warehouse and distribution, fabrication, assembly, office, and other general facility-level capital investments. You will partner with business leaders, engineering teams, consultants, contractors, and service providers to deliver safe, timely, and financially responsible results.
What You Will Do
Capital Project Leadership
- Lead facility planning, design, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness activities while managing project scope, budgets, schedules, and execution strategies.
- Identify and resolve cross-functional risks, ownership gaps, and critical decisions, escalating issues with clear business impacts and recommendations to maintain safety, quality, cost, schedule, and launch objectives.
Integrate Facility and Manufacturing Systems
- Serve as a facilities engineering expert, translating operational needs into integrated design, execution, and readiness plans for office, warehouse, distribution, and manufacturing environments.
- Lead the integration and performance of facility, utility, infrastructure, controls, network, and manufacturing systems, applying multidisciplinary expertise to optimize design decisions and operational outcomes.
Consultant & Contractor Management
- Lead and manage consultants, contractors, and suppliers through design, construction, commissioning, and project execution while ensuring safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
- Partner with manufacturing, operations, maintenance, safety, quality, IT, and OT teams to resolve priorities, manage trade-offs, and deliver successful project outcomes.
Stakeholder Engagement & Business Partnership
- Translate complex technical challenges into clear business recommendations, risks, and decision-ready project updates for leadership.
- Build stakeholder alignment and guide project decisions that support operational goals and long-term business objectives.
Control Cost, Schedule, Risk, Readiness, and Continuous Improvement
- Lead project controls, governance, capital planning, and facility optimization initiatives while ensuring safety, quality, sustainability, compliance, and financial stewardship.
- Oversee commissioning, turnover, and continuous improvement activities, including testing, documentation, training, maintenance strategies, and technical mentoring.
What You Will Have
Project & Program Management: Demonstrated experience managing integrated scope, schedules, milestones, budgets, forecasts, change control, performance reporting, and recovery plans for complex capital projects. Ability to manage multiple sizable projects and make cost, schedule, and risk trade-offs while protecting the overall business case. A record of anticipating risks, determining root causes, evaluating alternatives, escalating decisions, and driving corrective actions through verified closure. Success delivering projects in complex, matrixed organizations.
Leadership & Influence: Ability to align discipline engineers, contractors, suppliers, and internal partners; establish accountability; and drive commitments without direct reporting authority. Ability to communicate complex facility and project information clearly to senior leaders and facilitate timely, fact-based decisions. Experience negotiating construction contracts, developing supplier relationships, and influencing decisions across organizational levels.
Construction & Facilities Knowledge: Experience with facility planning, design, construction, commissioning, project delivery, and capital investment processes. Experience coordinating consultants, architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams. Demonstrated judgment integrating electrical, mechanical, and civil infrastructure scopes and resolving dependencies across an industrial facility. Experience validating system performance and confirming that documentation, training, maintenance strategies, punch-list closure, and turnover requirements are complete and accepted.
Problem Solving & Execution: Demonstrated ability to resolve ambiguous, cross-functional problems while maintaining focus on safety, business objectives, and critical milestones. Disciplined follow-through, including clear ownership, documented decisions, timely escalation, and verified closure.

- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and managing integrated cost, schedule, quality, and risk.
- Experience integrating electrical, mechanical, utility, civil, structural, fire-protection, building-control, and manufacturing-equipment requirements across a complex facility.
- Technical depth in at least one facility discipline, with broad working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and civil infrastructure systems and their interfaces.
- Experience leading design, constructability, safety, integrated testing, and readiness reviews and driving field issues, nonconformances, and punch-list items to closure.
- Knowledge of applicable building, fire, environmental, safety, and engineering codes and standards for industrial facilities.
- Professional Engineer (PE), Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Facility Manager, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), or a comparable credential, where relevant.
