The Senior IS Specialist role has ownership of architecture, design, support, and execution functions for the Enterprise Applications department within Caterpillar IT. This includes accountability for support metrics and the delivery of reliable, scalable technology services. The application portfolio includes legacy mainframe applications and solutions, multiple instances of SAP, Manufacturing, Order to Delivery, and pricing applications, among others.
The role defines and governs target-state system architecture, integration patterns, modernization roadmaps, security, resilience, and lifecycle strategies for legacy mainframe platforms while ensuring interoperability with distributed and cloud-based solutions. This is a critical role that helps ensure our end users experience a well-equipped, efficient, and simple support touchpoint. Further, this role owns the Continuous Improvement journey for the department, with programs that improve automation, monitoring, and analytic capabilities.
What you will do:
- Own and drive all incidents, service tasks, problem tickets and system optimization for operations portfolio, ensuring delivery against commitments, SLAs, and outcomes.
- Establish, monitor, and continuously improve standard work; ensure progress, risks, and dependencies are communicated effectively to stakeholders and leadership.
- Partner with business units and decision makers to support day-to-day operations, incident/problem resolution, and continuous service improvement.
- Implement and govern common operating procedures, controls, and metrics to strengthen quality, compliance, and operational resilience.
- Define and govern system architecture for legacy mainframe applications and solutions, including integration patterns, data flows, security, resiliency, scalability, performance, and lifecycle management.
- Develop modernization roadmaps that balance business continuity, technical debt reduction, platform currency, and integration with distributed, cloud, and enterprise applications.
- Execute multiple priorities & business requirements. Develops solutions that best meet the needs of the enterprise, with options to meet differentiated business capabilities as needed.
- Delivers highly available, leading IT services through best-in-class service level management practices with the ability to flex with changing business demands.
What you will have:
Application Design & Architecture
- Convert business requirements and logical models into secure, scalable and supportable application designs.
- Provide technical direction for complex, cross-functional and multi-technology applications.
Business Consulting & Process Improvement
- Provide consulting services to internal business groups on technology-enabled process improvement initiatives designed to strengthen business results.
Systems Integration, Testing & Implementation
- Design integration strategies and complex interfaces across applications, databases and technology platforms.
- Define and guide system testing strategies, including defect resolution, pilot testing and business validation.
Application Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor user experience and feedback on business applications and recommend enhancements that improve productivity and usability.
- Analyze recurring issues, anticipate risks and orchestrate the resolution of high-impact, cross-functional problems and teams.
Basic requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Systems or a related field.
- Pre-advanced English proficiency (Speaking and Reading).
- Extensive Information Technology experience involving enterprise application architecture, development, support, and modernization.
- Has the ability to lead, analyze and have a broader perspective on specific technology and related solutions. This requires a comprehensive understanding of application solutions, interfaces, security, data governance policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated experience working with legacy Mainframe applications and enterprise technology environments.
- Experience defining or contributing to application and technology roadmaps.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
Top candidates will also have:
- Experience leading large-scale application support and development initiatives.
- Experience modernizing legacy Mainframe applications and integrating them with distributed or cloud-based solutions.
- Practical experience using GenAI-assisted development or support tools, such as GitHub Copilot or automated agent workflows, to improve productivity, automation, or operational support.
- Experience driving innovation, automation, monitoring, and analytics initiatives.
- Lean or Continuous Improvement experience.
- Strong understanding of enterprise application integration, security, data governance, and technology lifecycle practices.
- Experience working across Procurement, Supply Chain, and/or Manufacturing environments.
- Proven ability to influence technical and business stakeholders and provide strategic direction across complex technology environments.
Note: This position requires the candidate to work on-site five days a week.
