When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Build the vision for Hydraulic Mining Shovel (HMS) performance and controls technology. Be the engineer providing influence at a product level. As a Senior Controls Engineer for HMS, you will provide algorithms and perform data analytics on HMS machines. You will evaluate controls and machine performance in simulation and provide solutions for any design issues discovered. You will also perform simulations to evaluate inquiries from the field. This position provides opportunity to gain an intimate understanding of HMS operation and performance and have the ability to impact them both. This position resides within the Hydraulic Mining Shovel Engineering team in Tucson, AZ.

What you will do:

  • Technology – Develop, organize, and maintain the algorithms for HMS technology features. This includes features like Operator Assist (protects machine cylinders), Payload (determine the mass of the material in the bucket), and future semi-autonomous features.

  • Electrohydraulic – Understand hydraulic and electrical schematics. Work with the different system teams to identify ideal hardware for the required controls inputs.

  • Simulation – Complete controls and/or performance simulations for current production and NPI HMS and provide recommendations driven by data

  • Quantifying – Identify the conditions that are needed to simulate real life hydraulic mining shovel operations. Update the simulation complexity depending on the needs of the study.

  • Data Analytics – Provide insight on operator behavior by utilizing live data channels from active machines

  • Resource coordination – Delegate tasks and utilize team resources, ensuring project fidelity and timely completion. Meet regularly with resources.

  • Innovation – Keep up-to-date on new technologies and drive continuous improvement to established techniques

What skills you will have:

Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations. Track record of developing innovative technical solutions and the ability to gain buy-in for implementation from all levels of the organization.

Effective Communications: Strong communication, leadership, project management, and business management skills. Direct work with internal process partners, suppliers, customers, and dealers requires the incumbent to demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise.
