The Role:

  • As a Senior Manager Tax, you will lead the North American indirect tax function supporting Caterpillar's captive finance businesses across the United States and Canada. You will manage indirect tax matters for Caterpillar Financial Services with particular emphasis on sales and use tax, property tax, and Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST. This position combines indirect tax leadership, captive finance expertise, accounting knowledge, tax compliance, and strategic business partnership. You will oversee and develop a team responsible for thousands of U.S. sales and property tax filings and Canadian indirect tax returns annually while serving as a senior advisor on complex tax issues. Success requires a leader who can calmly assess complex issues, establish priorities, mobilize the right resources, and drive timely resolution with a strong sense of urgency.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead North American indirect tax. Manage indirect tax matters across the United States and Canada for Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation, Caterpillar Financial Services Limited, Caterpillar Financial Funding Corporation, and Caterpillar Financial Commercial Account Corporation.
  • Own high-volume indirect tax compliance. Oversee, coach, teach, and train the team responsible for filing thousands of U.S. sales and property tax returns and Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST returns annually.
  • Serve as a senior tax advisor. Oversee accurate tax reporting and advise business partners and leadership on complex technical tax issues, enterprise implications, and related financial statement consequences.
  • Support captive finance transactions. Apply indirect tax expertise within a captive finance environment involving loans, leases, financing transactions, and related financial products, recognizing the tax implications created by different transaction structures.
  • Manage tax risk and opportunity. Identify emerging indirect tax risks, develop mitigation strategies, recognize beneficial tax opportunities, and implement solutions that balance compliance, financial impact, and business objectives.
  • Lead audits and tax authority matters. Guide responses to tax authority inquiries and audits, providing technical direction to managers and analysts while considering broader enterprise impact.
  • Monitor regulatory change. Evaluate proposed tax legislation and regulatory developments, determine potential financial and operational impact, and help ensure material tax positions are properly researched and documented.
  • Drive rapid issue resolution. Remain calm and decisive when complex issues arise, quickly assess facts, engage appropriate stakeholders, establish priorities, and drive issues to resolution with an appropriate sense of urgency.

Key Skills & Experience Required:

  • Captive Finance & Financial Services: Experience in captive finance, equipment finance, leasing, lending, or financial services, with an understanding of loans, leases, and financing transactions.
  • Indirect Tax Expertise: Strong knowledge of sales and use tax and property tax, including experience managing complex or high-volume tax compliance activities.
  • North American Tax: Experience with U.S. and Canadian indirect taxes, ideally including Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and working across multiple tax jurisdictions.
  • Accounting & Financial Acumen: Strong accounting or financial background with the ability to connect tax requirements, accounting treatment, and financial impacts to business decisions.
  • People Leadership: Proven ability to lead, coach, teach, and develop tax professionals while setting priorities and supporting a large, complex compliance workload.
  • Problem Solving & Communication: Strong business partnership and communication skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure, quickly assess and resolve issues, and operate with an appropriate sense of urgency.
