Caterpillar is developing a new advanced manufacturing campus in Sanford, North Carolina, to expand production capacity for compact track loaders and telehandlers. The modern, technology-enabled operation is expected to incorporate automation, robotics, digital production systems and integrated logistics capabilities to enhance safety, quality and operational performance. Employees will help build the products our customers rely on while developing skills in advanced manufacturing and supporting the continued growth of Caterpillar’s Cat Compact℠ business.
Job Summary
The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager will provide site-level EHS leadership for a new advanced manufacturing facility, helping the site launch safely and build strong operating discipline from the beginning. This leader will be involved from construction planning through startup and stable production. Early priorities will include contractor evaluation related to safety, safety training, contractor safety program adherence, construction risk, site controls and readiness.
This role supports Caterpillar’s Safety Driven culture, where safety is not a checklist or a set of procedures. It requires an EHS leader who can lead through ambiguity, influence project and operations leaders, work directly with contractors and employees, and build a safety culture where safe behavior is coached, expected and reinforced in the flow of daily work.
What You Will Do
- Lead EHS execution for a new advanced manufacturing site from construction planning through startup.
- Set clear construction-phase safety expectations for contractors, project teams and site leaders, including orientation, site access, work planning, hazard controls, inspections and corrective actions.
- Build practical EHS programs, training, audits, reporting routines and risk-reduction processes that support Caterpillar standards, legal requirements and local operating needs.
- Partner with construction, facilities, operations, engineering, maintenance, security, human resources, suppliers, contractors and system integrators to identify risks early and resolve issues quickly.
- Support safe implementation of advanced manufacturing systems, automated material movement, connected equipment, robotics, energy systems, utilities and production processes.
- Establish leader routines for hazard identification, risk assessment, contractor safety, incident response, corrective actions and emergency preparedness.
- Use EHS data, leading indicators, inspections, observations, incident trends and audit findings to guide decisions and focus resources where risk is highest.
- Provide leadership for environmental compliance, waste management, chemical management, air, water, stormwater, permitting and sustainability-related programs.
- Coach leaders and employees, using field observations, feedback, leader routines and follow-up to reinforce safe decisions during construction and startup.
What You Will Have
Environmental Health and Safety Policy Compliance: Knowledge of environmental, health and safety policies, standards, procedures and legal requirements; ability to lead programs that protect employees, contractors, visitors in a manufacturing environment.
Risk Management: Knowledge of tools, approaches and practices for identifying, assessing, controlling and monitoring operational, environmental, construction and occupational-health risks before they become incidents.
Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Ability to analyze technical, operational and compliance data, evaluate alternatives, assess risk and make sound recommendations. Ability to manage multiple priorities while balancing safety, compliance, schedule, cost and operational impact.
Project Management: Ability to plan, organize, monitor and deliver EHS-related projects, launch activities, corrective actions and readiness plans to scope, schedule and quality expectations. Ability to work with cross-functional teams.
Safety Culture Leadership: Ability to influence how leaders, employees and contractors think about risk, speak up about hazards, correct unsafe conditions and make safe choices in daily work.
Top Candidates Will Also Have
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Manufacturing, Construction Management.
- Relevant EHS professional certification, such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, CIH, OSHA 30, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 or a comparable credential.
- Experience improving EHS performance through both practical processes and behavior-based safety approaches.
- Experience supporting construction safety, contractor safety, facility startup, capital projects, commissioning or major operational change.
- Experience identifying hazards, assessing risk, implementing controls, investigating incidents and tracking corrective actions.
- Strong communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills.

Additional Info:
- Location: Sanford, North Carolina
- Work Arrangement: Onsite, five days per week. Locations may flex between temporary offices while transitioning to new facility.
- Travel: High percentage of travel (50-75%) may be required at certain times during construction planning, supplier reviews, equipment installation, commissioning, startup and production ramp-up.
- Schedule: This will be a demanding and very rewarding role. Selected candidate should have schedule flexibility to meet project requirements.

Summary Pay Range:
$128,470.00 - $192,710.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
