Job Description:

The Laboratory/Support Senior Engineer position will provide advanced metallurgical and materials engineering expertise to support Quality, Manufacturing, Operations, and Supplier Quality organizations. This role is essential for ensuring products meet Caterpillar specifications while minimizing quality risks, production disruptions, and warranty exposure.

The position will deliver value by providing technical leadership in the investigation and resolution of complex quality issues involving materials, heat treatment, manufacturing processes, and supplier components.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Provide metallurgical validation and technical engineering support for New Product Introduction (NPI) projects and Technical Services activities, contributing to quality, manufacturing, and new product launch objectives.

• Lead the resolution of complex heat treatment and coating-related issues in collaboration with customers and internal manufacturing organizations, minimizing quality risks and potential warranty exposure.

• Lead the execution of capital projects for laboratory and manufacturing improvements, focused on enhancing technical and operational capabilities.

• Provide metallurgical validation and technical oversight for outsourced heat treatment operations ensuring compliance with technical requirements, quality standards, and specifications.

• Develop and deliver metallurgy training programs focused on specifications, heat treatment, welding, acid etch analysis, and failure prevention for operators, engineers, and technicians, exceeding 120 man-hours of training annually.

• Create and maintain technical procedures, engineering standards, and laboratory documentation based on Caterpillar and international standards, including 1E Specifications, ASTM, AISI-SAE, and ISO requirements.

• Drive laboratory equipment reliability and preventive maintenance initiatives to achieve uninterrupted support for manufacturing operations.

• Manage metallurgical laboratory operations, including budgeting, procurement, equipment maintenance, and resource allocation, ensuring operational efficiency, resource availability, and cost control.

Required Qualifications:

• BS degree in Materials/Metallurgical Engineering

• Fluent English level, written and oral communication

• Minimum 2 years of experience around Heat Treat or Metallurgical environment

• Self-motivated, results-oriented problem solving and prioritization skills
• Previous experience in technical problem solving

Desired Qualifications:

• Previous experience in similar industries, for example automotive, glass, gear manufacturing or metal processing industries

• Project management experience

• Experience with ferrous heat treatment processes such as carburizing, direct hardening, tempering, and annealing.

• Prior experience creating and maintaining quality plans, including FMEAs, Control Plans, SPC skills, etc.

Knowledge of controls for heat treat processes (atmosphere control, heating time/rate, quench media controls, scan rate, etc.)
