At Caterpillar's Electric Power Division (EPD), we deliver advanced power solutions that keep hospitals running, data centres online, and critical infrastructure operational around the world. From emergency backup power during natural disasters to innovative microgrid technologies supporting the energy transition, our work powers what matters most.
We're looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join our team in Bengaluru and play a key role in designing and delivering bespoke power generation and microgrid control systems. This position provides the opportunity to contribute to projects from concept through commissioning while working alongside industry-leading engineers and customers globally.
What You Will Do:
As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, programming, and testing, and commissioning of advanced control systems for power generation and switchgear applications.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with project managers and stakeholders to develop technical solutions that meet customer requirements.
- Designing custom control systems for generator paralleling, power generation, and microgrid applications.
- Developing and reviewing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control philosophies, and technical documentation.
- Programming, testing, and validating PLCs, HMIs and other controls.
- Working closely with switchgear manufacturers and suppliers to ensure designs meet technical specifications and industry standards.
- Supporting commissioning activities and field start-ups, including on-site troubleshooting and performance verification.
- Providing technical support to Caterpillar dealers and customers, both remotely and on-site.
- Delivering technical training and supporting dealer capability development.
- Driving continuous improvement and sharing best practices across engineering teams.
What You Have:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar or equivalent experience.
- Extensive relevant experience in industrial power systems, controls engineering, or related fields.
- Experience in PLC programming (Codesys preferred, but others acceptable).
- Strong understanding of electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and strong interpersonal skills.
- Advanced technical analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
Preferred Experience
- Experience into 8 to 12years
- Experience with power generation controls, automation systems, and switchgear applications.
- HMI development and programming experience.
- Knowledge of low-voltage and medium-voltage power distribution systems.
- Experience with protective relaying schemes and power system control architectures.
- Experience using Electrical CAD, e.g. ePlan, AutoCAD, or similar engineering design tools.
- Field commissioning and troubleshooting experience.
Additional Info:
This role requires travel of up to 25% of the time across Southeast Asia and beyond to support project commissioning, customer engagement, and technical support activities.
