EHS Senior Specialist
Location: East Peoria, IL (SS)

Job Summary
As an EHS Senior Specialist, you will serve as an experienced individual contributor leading complex environmental, health, and safety initiatives that strengthen facility performance, reduce risk, and support regulatory compliance. This role is ideal for a safety professional who thrives in a manufacturing environment, can translate data into action, and is energized by improving safety culture, environmental stewardship, and operational performance. You will partner across functions to identify hazards, audit programs, drive training completion, and recommend sustainable improvements that protect people, equipment, and the environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support complex Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives that improve facility performance and compliance.
- Identify safety, health, and environmental hazards in operations and establish effective protection guidelines and preventive controls.
- Ensure required EHS training is completed to meet regulatory obligations and support facility, division, or enterprise objectives.
- Audit EHS programs for compliance with company standards, government regulations, and local operating requirements.
- Monitor recurring performance reports, identify trends and emerging risk conditions, and escalate improvement recommendations to line management.
- Partner with operations, engineering, leadership, and support teams to strengthen EHS processes, solve problems, and sustain a proactive safety culture.
- Support environmental compliance and sustainability efforts by helping control pollution and minimize waste of materials, energy, and water.
Required Skills
- Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Policy Compliance: Ability to implement and enforce EHS policies ensuring compliance with legal requirements and company standards while protecting employees and the environment.
- Risk Management: Knowledge of risk assessment tools and methodologies to identify, evaluate, and mitigate operational and environmental risks across manufacturing environments.
- Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Ability to analyze complex data, evaluate alternatives, and make informed decisions to improve safety, compliance, and operational performance.
- Problem Solving: Application of structured problem-solving techniques to identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and prevent recurrence of safety incidents.
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively across functions, influencing teams and stakeholders to achieve shared EHS and business outcomes.
- Interpersonal Relationships: Strong relationship-building skills to influence and engage employees, leadership, and external stakeholders in EHS initiatives.
- Sustainability: Understanding of sustainability principles and ability to integrate environmental strategies into operational processes.
- Overcoming Resistance to Change: Understanding the dynamics of organizational change and the ability to effectively influence, guide, and support individuals and teams through transitions in EHS practices, policies, and regulatory requirements. Demonstrates the ability to address concerns, promote adoption of new processes, and sustain behavioral change in complex operational environments.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a manufacturing, industrial, heavy equipment, and/or plant operating environment.
- Experience conducting compliance audits, incident reviews, hazard assessments, and corrective-action follow-up.
- Familiarity with occupational safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, emergency preparedness, and contractor/vendor risk review.
- Ability to analyze trend data and convert findings into practical recommendations for leaders and frontline teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
Summary Pay Range:
$112,710.00 - $169,060.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
