Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Job Description:

The Global Aftertreatment Lead Quality Engineer is a central role reporting to the Global Quality Manager, responsible for owning and sustaining the quality governance framework across all Aftertreatment facilities and key supply partners. This role defines common quality standards, governance processes, and escalation paths, and ensures they are consistently deployed, executed, and audit‑ready across the global network. The role emphasizes prevention over containment, standardization, and accountability, ensuring that quality risks are identified early, owned, and closed with sustainable, systemic actions.

The Lead Quality Engineer will serve as the central point of accountability for Aftertreatment quality governance, partnering with facility quality managers, Supplier Quality, Design Engineering, and enterprise quality functions. The role will drive the global governance cadence, harmonize compliance with CQMS and customer requirements across sites, lead the multi‑site audit program, and provide technical guidance and direction to quality teams throughout the network.

What you will do:

  • Own the global Aftertreatment quality governance framework, standardized KPI scorecards, escalation paths, and tracking of open actions through closure.
  • Ensure network‑wide compliance with CQMS, ISO 9001, and customer‑specific requirements; own the global audit program and coordinate preparation, execution, and closure of internal, corporate, and customer audits across all facilities.
  • Define and maintain global standards and templates for core quality documentation and controls and verify consistent deployment at each site.
  • Own the global quality event management process ensuring a common communication flow across sites and timely containment and closure.
  • Govern the global change management process for products and processes, including changes transferred between sites, ensuring they are risk‑assessed, validated, and approved (including PPAP updates where required) before release to production.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to quality engineers across the network; consolidate and report global quality status, risks, and help needed to the Global Quality Manager and Aftertreatment leadership.

Skills you will have:

  • Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision. Level Extensive Experience: Ensures governance records, audit evidence, and quality documentation are complete, traceable, and accurate. Establishes checks and cross‑checks that prevent errors, omissions, and oversights from reaching customers or auditors.
  • Collaborating: Act as the central quality governance lead, aligning facility quality managers, Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier Quality, and Design Engineering on common standards, ownership, and priorities. Work effectively across sites, cultures, and time zones to deploy best practices consistently. Escalate high‑severity or high‑risk issues with clear data, risk assessment, and recommended actions.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment. Level Extensive Experience: Makes risk‑based decisions on containment, product disposition, and escalation. Facilitates clear decisions among stakeholders and holds owners accountable for agreed actions.
  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations. Level Extensive Experience: Leads and coaches teams through structured problem solving, identifies systemic gaps in the quality system, and verifies effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Project Management: Plan and drive the global quality governance calendar, including multi‑site audit schedules, management reviews, and action closure tracking. Lead network‑wide quality system improvement and standardization projects with defined scope, owners, and deadlines. Support NPI, volume ramps, and site‑to‑site transfers by ensuring appropriate controls (PFMEA, Control Plans, MSA, capability evidence) are in place before production approval.
  • Leadership and Influence: Provide direction, coaching, and technical guidance to quality engineers across multiple facilities. Drive accountability and a common culture of quality across sites and functions without relying on direct authority.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing quality, quality systems, or quality engineering in a regulated or high‑complexity product environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of quality management systems and methodologies.
  • Experience leading internal audits and supporting customer or third‑party audits, including closure of findings, preferably across multiple sites.
  • Strong leadership, problem‑solving, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
  • English Advanced
  • Availability to travel

Top candidates will also have:

  • Certified Internal or Lead Auditor (ISO 9001 or equivalent); Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.
  • Experience with CQMS and Caterpillar quality processes
  • Prior experience in a multi‑site or global quality role, deploying common standards and influencing plant leadership and cross‑functional stakeholders.
