Role Summary

As a Business Development Consultant, you will lead growth strategy and execution for Caterpillar’s small excavator product line across Core regions. In this role, you will partner with the Excavation Division, Customer Solutions (CS), New Product Introduction (NPI), Engineering and enterprise teams to identify market opportunities, strengthen portfolio alignment and support strategic initiatives that advance Excavation’s long-term growth goals.

Caterpillar’s Excavation Division, part of the Construction Industries segment, designs and manufactures tracked and wheeled excavators from 11 to 95 metric tons, along with Cat Work Tools. This position plays a key role in helping shape product direction, improve customer and dealer outcomes and support Caterpillar’s 2030 goals and beyond.

What You’ll Do

  • Partner with Customer Solutions, NPI and Engineering teams to align the small excavator portfolio with customer needs, industry trends and regional growth opportunities.

  • Synthesize voice-of-customer insights, competitive intelligence and market data to influence the regional product strategy roadmap.

  • Support Customer Solutions and dealer needs across Core regions, including product availability, quality, aftermarket support and technology requirements.

  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives that address product, segment and regional growth opportunities.

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with sales, marketing, finance, operations and product support teams to drive alignment and execution across the business.

  • Strategic Thinking: Connects market trends, customer needs and business priorities to identify opportunities and keep teams focused on key growth drivers.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience.

  • Experience translating customer needs and field insights into future product enhancements and NPI priorities.

  • Strong customer orientation, with the ability to understand customer challenges and identify practical, value-driven solutions.

  • Creative, forward-thinking problem-solving skills with a passion for new ideas and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to serve as a responsive point of contact for Customer Solutions teams, balancing urgency with sound prioritization.

  • Flexibility to support urgent business needs and customer priorities.

Additional Information:

  • Work location: Peoria, IL

  • Onsite requirement: 5 days per week

  • Travel: Up to 30% domestic

  • Candidates relocating to Peoria, IL are eligible for relocation assistance.

Summary Pay Range:

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
