What You Will Do

As a UX Researcher, you will conduct user research at the intersection of digital and physical machine experiences under the guidance of a Lead and/or Senior team members. You will be translating insights into actionable recommendations that improve Caterpillar products and services. You’ll collaborate with Expert Operators, Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, and stakeholders to keep user needs central to decision-making.

You will also:

  • Plan and conduct user research (surveys, in-depth interviews, contextual inquiries, eye tracking, and concept testing) with support from senior researchers.
  • Synthesize real user behavior and feedback into clear, actionable insights and recommendations for design and product teams to improve our product and service features and/or develop new ones.
  • Clarify operator, customer, and business needs and synthesize them to help support evidence‑based interaction concepts that drive safe, efficient, and intuitive operation of heavy equipment in real‑world conditions.
  • Create and maintain shareable UX research artifacts, such as operator journeys, task flows, mental models, storyboards, and experience maps, to align cross‑functional teams around operator needs and context of use.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Design, Product, Marketing, Sales, and Data/Analytics teams.
  • Translate research findings (usability testing, field studies, simulations) into clear, prioritized insights and recommendations that inform HMI, display, and overall heavy equipment UX decisions.
  • Support research operations: documentation, note-taking, analysis, and stakeholder presentations.
  • Prioritize research opportunities with your Lead and Manager based on product goals and business needs.

What You Have:

  • Working knowledge of Human Factor Interaction (HFI) and/or Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles and UX research methods.
  • Ability to analyze data and present recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and UI design basics.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Human Factors, Industrial Design, Industrial Engineering, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Cognitive Science, Information Science) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience applying user research in product/service teams; ability to facilitate common methods and produce clear deliverables.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in mixed-method HMI research.
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods, behavioral analysis, and statistics is preferred.
  • Experience with physical ergonomics is desired.
  • Ability to conduct both physical and digital customer research.
  • Excellent working knowledge of principles of experiment design is desired.
  • A balanced understanding of strategy, research, and interaction.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, team-oriented, cross-functional environment.
  • Experience conducting user research in an applied setting.
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to create compelling presentations and convey insights and design solutions through storytelling across all levels.
  • Desirable is flexibility/adaptability (ability to change direction based upon team and stakeholder consensus).

Base Minimum Pay:

€58,719.00

Please note that salary is only one component of the total compensation and benefit package available at Caterpillar.
