Job Title: Tooling Technician
Location: Skinningrove, Saltburn-by-the-Sea
Salary: £18.27 p/h
Hours: Full Time, Permanent
Travel: Up to 5% for training and development
Shift Pattern: 4 on 4 off, 2-day shifts, 2-night shifts.

About Caterpillar Skinningrove
Caterpillar Skinningrove, located near Teeside, began operations in 1998. The facility produces steel track shoes. When mounted on the track link assembly, the track shoes form the 'Cat track' found on Hydraulic Excavators, Track Type Loaders, and Track Type Tractors.
The Opportunity:
The Tooling Technician is responsible for manufacturing, maintaining, and improving production tooling to tight tolerances, ensuring reliable performance and compliance with quality standards. The role involves tool setting, machine changes, equipment upkeep, and accurate documentation, while supporting troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives. Working closely with Operations, the technician ensures equipment availability, maintains key records, and upholds high safety standards in all activities.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Manufacture and fit production tooling to tight tolerances.
Carry out repair, maintenance, and continuous improvement of tooling.
Build, assemble, and set tooling in line with production requirements.
Perform machine tool changes during production operations.
Operate and conduct daily maintenance of tool room equipment, including surface grinders and hydraulic presses.
Accurately document all service, maintenance, and repair work carried out.
Provide technical expertise for troubleshooting and support across operational issues.
Ensure all deliverables meet required quality standards and compliance regulations.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, focusing on cost efficiency and operational velocity, and implement solutions where appropriate.
Manage and deliver specific projects within areas of responsibility.
Plan, manage, and accurately record all tooling activities.
Work closely with the Operations team to identify equipment concerns and ensure availability.
Carry out general site maintenance tasks as required.
Maintain detailed shift handovers to ensure smooth operational transitions.
Record and maintain comprehensive tooling failure logs.
Work safely at height using appropriate safety equipment and PPE.
Use precision measuring equipment, including verniers and micrometers.
Utilise CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems) effectively.
Operate lifting equipment safely and in accordance with regulations.
Maintain a proactive approach to health and safety, ensuring compliance with all company policies and procedures.
Qualifications
NVQ2 Level 2 in Mechanical Engineering or similar field, or qualified by experience
What skills/experience you will have:
Proven experience in the use of hand tools and machinery relevant to tool making
Strong understanding of machining processes and principles
Ability to read engineering drawings
Ability to use a range of power and hand tools
Proactive approach, with bias for action
Health and Safety always minded
Demonstrates mutual respect
Attention to detail
Communicates well (verbally and written)
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team environment
Problem solving capabilities & logical thinking
Top candidates will also have:
Ability to read engineering drawings
Hydraulic and mechanical experience
Truck driving licence (reach, counter balance, Jib)
Knowledge and proficient use of IT systems
