Job Summary
The Senior Design Engineer – Design for Modern Manufacturing (DfMM) role provides design‑led manufacturing integration within product development by ensuring design solutions are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, automation, quality, safety, and remanufacturing.
This role supports Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD) by translating Manufacturing Requirements and Voice of Manufacturing (VoM) into clear, actionable, and designer‑usable guidance early in the design process.
This position acts as a bridge between design and manufacturing, ensuring DFx principles are embedded naturally into design decision‑making. The role works closely with Design Engineering peers, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations to reduce manufacturing risk, improve producibility, and enable consistent application of Design for Modern Manufacturing principles across product families, several Caterpillar industries and facilities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide design leadership for Design for Modern Manufacturing (DfMM) from a design perspective, including Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, Automation, Quality, Safety, and Remanufacturing.
- Translate Manufacturing Requirements and Voice of Manufacturing (VoM) into design‑relevant guidance, examples, and tradeoff criteria that designers can apply during concept and detailed design.
- Apply engineering judgment to evaluate design alternatives and tradeoffs, ensuring DfMM objectives are met without compromising product performance, durability, or functional requirements.
- Embed DfMM thinking early in CPPD by participating in design reviews, DfX assessments, and NPI activities focused on design decision quality.
- Collaborate with Design Engineering teams to ensure designs appropriately reflect manufacturing process capability, variability, and risk while maintaining product function and performance.
- Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations to surface recurring manufacturability, quality, or automation issues and drive upstream design improvements.
- Support the development, standardization, and governance of Manufacturing Requirement Documents (MRDs) and DfMM criteria, with emphasis on clarity, usability, and timing from a designer’s point of view.
- Contribute to definition of validation approaches for manufacturing requirements (analysis, simulation, and internal digital tools), partnering with IT development teams as needed, ensuring validation expectations are feasible within the design workflow.
- Continuously improve DfMM tools, guidance, and processes based on designer feedback, lessons learned, and production outcomes.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
- Advanced English speaking is required.
Skills the candidate will have
Technical Excellence
- Expert in manufacturing engineering, product development, or design‑manufacturing integration.
- Working knowledge of fabrication, welding, machining, assembly, or related manufacturing processes.
Product Design
- Working knowledge cross‑functionally with design and manufacturing teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expert in DFx, CPPD or NPI programs.
- Strong design literacy, including CAD modeling, tolerancing/GD&T, PMI, and design‑for‑process considerations (e.g., weldment design, assembly logic).
- Familiarity with manufacturing validation methods, design analysis, or digital simulation tools.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
Additional Information
- On-site work based in Monterrey, Nuevo León. Santa Maria office.
- Work schedule is Monday to Friday (7am to 4pm).
- Travel Requirement: Availability to travel around 10% of the time. International and domestic travel. Travel VISA is required.
