Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Role Summary

This role plays a key part in shaping product direction, clarifying priorities, defining outcomes, and ensuring work is well understood before it moves into delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Product Management

  • Lead product discovery and continuous refinement activities aligned to business priorities and customer needs.
  • Shape and refine product opportunities, features, and enhancements based on evidence, feedback, and strategic direction.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of users, workflows, operational contexts, and constraints relevant to the product domain.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to break down priorities into clear problem areas, hypotheses, and actionable product work.
  • Ensure product work is grounded in:
    • Customer and user needs
    • Business goals, workflows, and operating realities
    • Technical, commercial, and compliance considerations

Use Case Definition & Product Framing

  • Develop high‑quality features with clear product framing, including:
    • Problem statements and use cases
    • Intended user and business outcomes
    • Value hypotheses and assumptions
    • Success criteria and constraints
  • Contribute to initiative and feature breakdown by clarifying scope, intent, boundaries, and expected outcomes
  • Produce product artefacts suitable for design, engineering, validation, and delivery readiness.

Solution Exploration (Discovery Phase)

  • Partner with engineering, architecture, and design teams during early solution exploration.
  • Represent product intent, user needs, and business context throughout discovery and solution development activities.
  • Ensure scope, assumptions, and success measures remain aligned with product goals and stakeholder expectations.

(This role influences solution direction through product insight but does not own architecture or implementation decisions.)

Proof of Value & Validation

  • Drive proof‑of‑concept and pilot activities to validate:
    • Customer and operator value
    • Feasibility and scalability of proposed capabilities
    • Key technical, operational, and product constraints
  • Ensure validation evidence is objective, measurable, and suitable for informed product and investment decisions.

Discovery Outcomes & Production Enablement

  • Synthesize discovery findings into clear, concise, and decision‑ready outputs
  • Provide recommendations to stakeholders to:
    • Progress opportunities forward
    • Refine scope, sequencing, or approach
    • De-prioritize or stop work where value is not demonstrated
  • Support the transition of validated work into backlog readiness, planning, and delivery activities.

What This Role Does Not Own

  • Product strategy or portfolio direction
  • Roadmap ownership or prioritization decisions
  • Final implementation design or technical solution ownership
  • Delivery scope, timelines, or release commitments
  • Architecture or technical governance decisions

Key Working Relationships

  • Engineering and Delivery Teams – Key partners for feasibility, planning, and execution
  • Business Stakeholders – Partners in strategy, priorities, and value realization
  • Design and Architecture Partners – Contributors to product experience, solution shaping, and feasibility assessment
  • Customers, Users, and Domain Experts – Sources of insight into needs, workflows, and operational realities
  • Research, Validation, or Pilot Teams – Partners in evidence gathering, experimentation, and learning
  • Operational and Delivery Stakeholders – Recipients and partners for rollout, adoption, and ongoing product evolution

Success Measures

The Product Manager is successful when:

  • Product inputs and requirements are clear, evidence-based, and actionable
  • Stakeholders can make timely, confident decisions with reduced ambiguity
  • Collaboration remains effective, with shared understanding of priorities, outcomes, and ownership boundaries
