Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Role Definition

Supports manufacturing process development projects focused on welding operations, including the acquisition, selection, installation, startup, and documentation of equipment and workstations that improve production flow. Contributes to safer, higher-quality, more productive, and cost-effective welding operations by executing capital projects, improving process capability, and supporting new product introductions. Provides technical support for welding equipment, positioners, automated solutions, engineering drawings, and process documentation. Works with suppliers and cross-functional plant teams. The role does not include direct people-management responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Lead capital expenditure projects for welding equipment, positioners, tooling, and related manufacturing systems.

  • Evaluate and select equipment and workstation concepts by reviewing technical requirements, safety considerations, process flow, and manufacturing feasibility.

  • Coordinate the installation, commissioning, startup, and process stabilization of welding equipment and positioners.

  • Develop, implement, validate, and document welding processes and workstation standards.

  • Provide technical support for Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), and submerged arc welding applications.

  • Interpret welding drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering specifications to support process and equipment decisions.

  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities and integrate manufacturing requirements into new or modified welding processes.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and plant functions on equipment design reviews, automation opportunities, issue resolution, and safe production launch.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

English: Intermediate to advanced proficiency required for technical documentation, supplier interaction, and collaboration on global projects.

Skill Descriptors

Computer-Aided Design & Engineering

  • Generates technical specifications for welding equipment, positioners, tooling, or components using CAD software.

  • Creates and updates 2D layouts, schematics, and workstation drawings in AutoCAD.

  • Produces orthogonal and perspective views needed for design reviews and supplier communication.

  • Applies standard drawing practices when revising workstation or equipment concepts.

  • Uses drawing information and GD&T to verify alignment between product requirements and manufacturing solutions.

Engineering - MFG

  • Drafts technical requirements and supports resolution of manufacturing engineering issues.

  • Applies welding-process knowledge to equipment selection, workstation design, and process documentation.

  • Coordinates basic installation, commissioning, and startup activities for manufacturing equipment.

  • Follows applicable engineering, safety, and manufacturing standards and escalates unusual issues.

  • Supports high-quality process development through clear instructions, validation evidence, and operator guidance.

Project Management

  • Develops project scope, cost estimates, schedules, milestones, and implementation plans for CAPEX initiatives.

  • Organizes and monitors significant equipment-acquisition and installation projects.

  • Identifies project risks, safety concerns, and schedule vulnerabilities and develops contingency actions.

  • Coordinates project reviews with suppliers, plant stakeholders, sponsors, and technical teams.

  • Maintains project communication, status reporting, documentation, and control mechanisms.

  • Tracks installation, startup, validation, and stabilization deliverables through completion.

Technical Troubleshooting

  • Uses fact-finding and diagnostic methods to identify welding-equipment and process problems.

  • Works with supplier manuals, technical guides, drawings, and diagnostic tools during startup and issue resolution.

  • Analyzes operating conditions and process evidence to distinguish equipment, tooling, and method-related causes.

  • Documents technical problems, investigations, corrective actions, and lessons learned.

  • Escalates complex issues and coordinates supplier or specialist support when required.

Top Candidates

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or comparable welding inspection credentials.

  • Hands-on experience with MIG, TIG, and submerged arc welding in a heavy manufacturing or metal fabrication environment.

  • Experience selecting, procuring, installing, and launching welding machines, positioners, and automated equipment.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and interpretation of welding drawings and GD&T.

  • Experience with CAPEX governance, supplier technical reviews, and New Product Introduction projects.

  • Knowledge of welding automation, robotic applications, fixture design, and safe workstation integration.
