Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Job Summary:

The Integrated Components Division (ICD) designs and manufactures embedded components that enhance machine performance, quality, and safety. Working closely with product groups and business partners, ICD supports current designs—such as seals, gaskets, and isolation mounts—while driving innovation, sustainability, and global availability. All components are engineered with long term serviceability and aftermarket needs in mind.

The Test and Validation Engineer for the Seal & Mount Solutions team plays a critical, hands‑on role supporting the engineering team through lab‑based testing, validation, and test method development for seals and isolation mounts. This role is highly lab intensive, with approximately 90% of time spent executing, troubleshooting, and improving component tests using a variety of lab equipment, and the remaining time focused on documentation, planning, and coordination. The position works closely with engineering to ensure robust validation, reliable test data, and continuous improvement of lab capabilities.

What You Will Do:

  • Work in a hands on, fast paced role, where regular movement and active participation is required, along with the ability to comfortably lift ~30lbs and move test hardware safely around the lab.
  • Set up dynamic and static component testing, including seals, gaskets, and isolation mounts, using lab-based test equipment.
  • Set up, run, troubleshoot, and tear down test fixtures and machines, ensuring safe, efficient, and repeatable testing.
  • Support validation and APQP activities, including DVP&R ownership, test readiness reviews, and validation scheduling for seals and mounts.
  • Document, analyze, and clearly communicate test results through accurate, well-structured reports aligned with engineering needs.
  • Lead and support daily lab operations, including scheduling, equipment maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of lab methods.

Education requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited engineering curriculum.

What skills you will have:

Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure accuracy in test data by properly recording test conditions, variables, procedures, and results. This includes taking appropriate steps to reduce sources of test variability, improve repeatability, and maintain the quality and value of testing activities.

Analytical Thinking: Ability to understand not only how tests are performed, but also why they are conducted. This includes supporting Design Engineers in developing new and innovative test methods that produce meaningful, repeatable, and valuable results.

Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of decision-making processes, tools, and techniques used to assess testing challenges and adapt to unforeseen circumstances. This includes making informed decisions that support testing continuity, data integrity, and overall test value.

Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively work and communicate with a multifunctional engineering team with different needs and perspectives to describe testing shortfalls, results, and ways to adapt to ongoing issues.

Technical Excellence: Ability to apply various testing methods and technologies to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges related to various seals, rubber components and isolation mounts owned by the team.

Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics required to organize, plan, monitor and control the various projects, test plans, and APQP related activities that the team supports daily.

Product Testing: Knowledge of the proper use of tools, equipment, and instrumentation, including dial indicators, multimeters, torque wrenches, and other relevant test equipment. This includes the ability to assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and tear down tests and test equipment, while working with the engineering team to design, plan, and execute tests for seals and mounts product lines.

Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of structured troubleshooting approaches, specialized tools, and problem-solving techniques used to support quality throughout the development process. This includes prototype component testing, root cause analysis, and evaluation of failed parts returned from customers.

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Hands on sealing or mount testing experience
  • Creo experience
  • Forklift experience or willingness to be trained
  • Familiarity with APQP, structured validation processes, and gate reviews
  • Strong time management skills to balance lab priorities and office time
  • Demonstrated self-starter mindset with a passion for lab work and practical problem solving

Additional Information:

  • This position requires the candidate to work onsite five days a week at the Mossville, IL office.
  • Domestic relocation assistance is NOT available for this position. Any relocation costs incurred would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
  • Visa sponsorship is NOT available with this position.
  • This position may require up to 5% travel.
