Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. You will have the opportunity to join the Resource Industries Division supporting Large Mining Trucks. You’ll work across the full product lifecycle on Large Mining Trucks, from early concept through production. You will collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical system, manufacturing, and supplier teams.

About the Role

As a Engineering Project Team Leader, you will lead multiple or complex engineering projects that span functions, organizations, products, and value chains. You will define project scope, align business and technical priorities, coordinate cross-functional resources, and drive progress from concept through execution. This is a high-visibility opportunity for an engineering leader who can combine technical excellence, project leadership, and stakeholder influence to help deliver innovative solutions for customers and the business.

This role is ideal for Mechanical Engineers with experience leading projects related to vehicle systems, structures, packaging, routing, and integration, as well as Electrical Engineering Leaders who enjoy working at the intersection of both disciplines.

Additional Information:

  • The primary work location for this role is Tucson, AZ - Mining Center, with a secondary location being Decatur, IL.

  • Requirement is to work on-site full-time at a Caterpillar facility.

  • Sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • This role might require up to 25% travel.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • End-to-end ownership: Influence design decisions from concept through validation and production, including machine transport and assembly tradeoffs.

  • True cross-functional collaboration: Work alongside mechanical design, electrical systems, manufacturing, suppliers, and purchasing to optimize performance, quality, durability, and cost.

  • Complex product systems: Apply your engineering expertise to large, highly integrated off-highway mining trucks operating in demanding environments.

  • Growth & impact: Strengthen leadership skills while delivering high-value solutions to customers across diverse applications and platforms.

What You Will Do

  • Lead end-to-end engineering projects, defining scope aligned to business priorities while driving execution across cost, quality, timing, and delivery.

  • Own mechanical design and integration of electrical systems within large, complex vehicle platforms, ensuring robust routing, protection, and packaging.

  • Design and develop installation hardware (e.g., brackets, harness routing, enclosures) that balance performance with durability.

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration across product development, manufacturing, supply chain, commercial, and product support teams to deliver optimized solutions.

  • Partner with suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure manufacturability, serviceability, and lifecycle efficiency while supporting supplier development.

  • Lead prototype builds, validation, and testing activities, including fit, form, function, and durability assessments.

  • Establish design requirements and lead design reviews to ensure alignment with engineering standards, best practices, and environmental/mechanical constraints.

  • Mentor and guide project teams, influencing technical decisions, resolving complex issues, and driving alignment across diverse stakeholders.

Degree Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related accredited engineering discipline.

What Skills You Will Bring

  • Project Management: expert-level ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control complex engineering projects involving multiple stakeholders.

  • Technical Excellence: strong technical depth and the ability to develop solutions to significant engineering challenges while engaging the right subject matter experts.

  • Influencing Through Expertise: proven ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, provide credible recommendations, and influence decisions with evidence-based insight.

  • Team Management: demonstrated ability to lead teams, unify contributors around shared objectives, and maintain momentum through execution.

  • Requirements Analysis: experience translating business and technical needs into clear requirements, documentation, and traceable deliverables.

  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: ability to evaluate business impact, isolate root causes, and resolve difficult technical problems in a manufacturing or product environment.

  • Product Design and Development: experience guiding products, technologies, or services from concept through development and into production or deployment.

  • Products and Services Knowledge: understanding of how products, services, and value chains interact, including operational and competitive considerations.

Top Candidates Will Have

  • Proven ability to lead multiple large scale engineering projects from concept through production in a cross-functional environment.

  • Experience with large mining trucks, heavy equipment, or other equipment related to mining applications.

  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive experience with Creo, Vis View, and Teamcenter, Electric SDP.

  • Background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or integrated systems design.

  • Hands-on experience with vehicle systems integration, including routing, packaging, structural interfaces, and installation design.
