Job Summary:

At Caterpillar’s Decatur, IL facility, we manufacture and assemble Large Mining and Construction Equipment. In this role as an Automation Engineer, you will report to the Supply Chain Planning Manager and will be responsible for platform integration with automation software, you will research customer experiences, document technical specifications, debug and maintain systems, and lead software development.  As a member of the Supply Chain team, you will need to have a growth mindset, promote continuous improvement, and help build a defect-free culture. What you will do:

  • Lead the integration of existing platforms with cutting-edge automation software to enhance efficiency and performance.
  • Collect and research data on customer experience with autonomous platforms.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for architecture specifications, software design, verification plans, training materials and safety protocols.
  • Utilize appropriate tools to debug, test and maintain software and hardware systems of autonomous equipment; assisting in the verification and validation process.
  • Participate in design and development of application software.

Degree Requirements:

  • Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Experience with REST APIs
  •  Hands on experience with application programming interface
  • VDA 5050 Standards Knowledge
  • Hardware, Software integration (Fleet management, API)
  • PLC programming knowledge

What Skills you will have:

Problem Solving:

  • Identifies and documents specific problems and resolution alternatives.
  • Examines a specific problem and understands the perspective of each involved stakeholder.
  • Develops alternative techniques for assessing accuracy and relevance of information.
  • Helps to analyze risks and benefits of alternative approaches and obtain decision on resolution.
  • Uses fact-finding techniques and diagnostic tools to identify problems.

Software Development Life Cycle:

  • Describes similarities and differences of life cycle for new product development vs. new release.
  • Identifies common issues, problems, and considerations for each phase of the life cycle.
  • Works with a formal life cycle methodology.
  • Explains phases, activities, dependencies, deliverables, and key decision points.
  • Interprets product development plans and functional documentation.

Technical Troubleshooting:

  • Resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation.
  • Level Working Knowledge:
  • Discovers, analyzes, and resolves hardware, software or application problems.
  • Works with vendor-specific diagnostic guides, tools and utilities.
  • Handles calls related to product features, applications, and compatibility standards.
  • Analyzes code, logs, and current systems as part of advanced troubleshooting.
  • Records and reports specific technical problems, solving processes and tools that have been used.

The primary location for this position is Decatur, IL

Summary Pay Range:

$95,640.00 - $155,400.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
