About the Role / What You Will Do

Plans and directs all aspects of Caterpillar’s learning and development policies, objectives, and initiatives, ensuring alignment with the strategic objectives of the company.

  • Champions the initiatives of diverse organizational learning and development programs, promoting effective knowledge management strategies to meet organizational objectives.

  • Develops and administers the organization's education, training, and development programs that foster the organizational expertise needed to maximize employee effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Establishes and maintains a learning/training assessment system in cooperation with internal and external training providers to evaluate the effectiveness of learning outcomes and to implement enhancements as needed.

  • Ensures employee acceptance and adoption of new technologies and business processes through investigating and evaluating them in the context of their applicability to the business.

  • Knowledge of employee learning and development methodologies and the ability to ensure that a target population has the knowledge and skills required to meet both tactical and strategic objectives.  Shapes the field of training and development by taking an active part in L&D associations and conferences. Advocates for the support of senior management to help meet the organization's learning and development needs. Predicts industry and marketplace trends in training and development. Designs, implements and evaluates assessment instruments to help evaluate individual and organizational outcomes. Leads in defining strategies and best practices for learning and development.

  • Through knowledge of the organization's vision, structure, culture, philosophy, operating principles, values, and code of ethics; demonstrates the ability to understand the value of aligning capabilities with business goals to support optimal performance. Promotes the rationale and organizing principles of Caterpillar’s enterprise and HR structures. Aligns the Learning and Development function’s plans with the enterprise vision and key HR priorities. Coaches others on the company’s philosophy, culture, history and navigating processes. Translates enterprise strategies into understanding of key responsibilities and practices of multiple departments and/or business segments. Effectively utilizes formal and informal channels for information and decision making. Participates in developing formal procedures and structures for getting things done within the organization.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies that impact decisions within and outside the organization.  Debates issues to bring the most critical points to the forefront for decision making. Gains acceptance of ideas and suggestions from senior business executives. Coaches others on effective influencing strategies and tactics. Using experience and expertise, influences high-impact, high-risk and highly complex situations. Demonstrates the ability to influence at all levels of the organization, including executive officers.

  • Demonstrates "big picture" thinking and planning and the ability to apply organizational acumen and competitiveness to identify and maintain focus on key success factors for the organization. Directs internal and external strategic alliances and partnerships for mutual benefit. Makes sound business decisions on behalf of the business when faced with complex and contradictory alternatives. Builds the strategic thinking capability of the enterprise and the Learning and Development function. Interprets, analyzes and acts decisively when creating and executing business plans. Develops and implements contingency plans in response to potential pressures such as funding, etc. to ensure programs are delivered. Anticipates key marketplace trends, opportunities, and vulnerabilities and proactively prepares the organization.

  • Knowledge of leadership practices and processes with the ability to use strategies and skills to enlist others in setting, embracing and achieving objectives. Evaluates the gaps in the leadership pipeline and designs programs to improve leader performance. Coaches others in leadership concepts and goal achievement based on organizational need. Champions behaviors that inspire collaboration and move the organization to reach its strategic objectives. Monitors the industry for leadership partners and implements programs within the organization. Uses role modeling and communication to improve the ability of leaders to demonstrate our leadership attributes.
