JOB PURPOSE: As an entry level, engineering degreed position, job assignments are planned to provide experience and familiarization with the technical staff, methods, practices, and programs of the company and assigned area. Projects and assignments are in the electrical, electronics, or software field.
JOB DUTIES: For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or “insights,” to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Key electronic component technologies provide the foundational technology building blocks that enable valuable data to be gathered from machines and engines. The integrated mechanical and electronic control systems, associated control algorithms and on-board information systems generate, store and transmit this critical machine information that is highly useful for product development and product improvement.

The key role of this entry level engineering position is to learn and assist: to gain an understanding of Caterpillar’s business, products, systems, and procedures; to learn and develop skills which result from the practical application of basic engineering knowledge; and to provide assistance to a project team or others in the work group. Projects will usually be of short duration and work results will affect those working on the same project or assignment. Typically, decisions will impact routine, low risk issues that may affect the project team, suppliers, or internal customers. Challenges include applying theory, learning procedures, and understanding the technology.

The Electronic Engineer position may work in any number of functional areas developing controls requiring an engineering degree, including, but not limited to, product design, development, research, quality, reliability, and product performance/support.

Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products, processes, or systems; communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units; contribute to the design of new products and processes; perform product and process maintenance; support other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers, and suppliers.

Attention to detail is critical. Uses readily available clear and direct references and provides straightforward solutions to problems. Collects and evaluates data and develops plans for assignments. Electronic Engineers may expect to have direct contact with other team members, customers and suppliers.

Keeping up with industry trends and new technology breakthroughs is essential and requires continuous learning through self/internet study as well as interaction with other engineers through conferences and papers. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Learning will focus on methods, processes and systems applied to engineering functions and practical application of theory, and building a knowledge of Caterpillar’s products, suppliers & customers.

Good communication is expected for technical status updates and when working closely with other system developers, support teams and testing staff in multiple geographic locations and organizations.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
Requires a bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum (Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical). Incumbents must have excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments. Requires strong technical skills. Must have strong problem solving skills and analytical skills and the ability to communicate technical information effectively.
