Job Description:

JOB DUTIES:  Service Information Developer 1 position will utilize the SIS Authoring system to develop and electronically author a variety of service information types used to operate, maintain, and repair Caterpillar equipment.  This information is based on complex research of product service requirements and must be completed in a timely, accurate manner.  SIS is an SGML (ISO standard) based proprietary system that provides data intelligence by means of tagging content and structure that enables documents to be published electronically in the format specified by the engineer.

Assignments support both new and non-current product design and are less complex than the work of Service Information Developer 2.  Service information products that are produced by Service Information Developer 1s have a significant impact on the efficiency and profitability of dealer service operations.  Information about operation, safety, and environmental issues is used as a defense tool in product litigation.    

The service information engineering process begins when NPI information appears in the Engineering Data System and continues with design change through the product life cycle. The Service Information Developer 1 provides information to the Information Integrator to support the development of Document Content Outlines (DCO). Project Leaders assign work to Service Information Developer 1s. Service Information Developer 1s must determine if information elements (IEs) can be reused as-is, if they need revision, or if new IEs need to be created. Research is completed by contacting Product Design/Support Engineers and through the use of a variety of corporate systems and resources.  Service Information Developer 1 also takes photographs to support product service procedures and makes assignments to Illustrators who create the needed graphics.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE : Must be capable of using a variety of complex systems/software and digital photographic equipment to develop service literature.  A four-year engineering or technology degree is preferred, however, significant experience within the Service Information Department with demonstrated technical writing skills or hands-on iron mechanical skills will be considered. Candidates must have good mechanical aptitude, a customer focus, initiative, planning and organization skills, good communication skills, and the ability to travel if required.  Candidates must be team players, have the ability and desire to learn complex technologies, and have good interpersonal and mentoring skills.
