Job Description:

This multi-incumbent position is a Standard Job throughout the corporation that may function in a staff capacity in a particular phase of Quality Assurance responsibilities in assigned areas, including product test procedures and specifications, performing audits, improvements of products reliability and customer satisfaction through support of the NPI (New Product Introduction) program and resolution of metallurgical grief for steel/forgings at supplier or plant levels.

The incumbent in this position develops plans and tools that are used for internal quality certification for both the implementation of MQ12005 and MQ13005. MQ12005 implementation will primarily align with CPS and realize the synergies of CPS during the implementation of MQ 12005. Implementation of MQ12005 will also align with the corporate requirements of the successful implementation of APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) tools.  

This position is required to work with all employees to improve quality practices in their processes through quality manner such as daily coaching, tracking CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) projects & Scorecard, providing quality support if any poor results or negative trends occur, developing IQC training programs, providing training courses of quality specifications to employees, conducting internal quality audits, facilitating management reviews, etc.

This position is required to implement the Idea Generation Process and Corrective and Preventive action processes by clarifying and verifying all ideas with related persons and spot check, explain the validation reasons, and encourage all employees to make contributions to achieve zero defect in operations.
This position is required to be a coordinator between related teams when there are issues or roadblocks during implementing CQI projects and actions generated from the Idea Generation Process, and track its implementation progress.

Incumbents coordinate with engineering personnel on matters regarding Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD), New Product Introduction (NPI), prove design to production, engineering changes and deviations, supplier designs, specification approvals, and meeting cost reduction goals.

This position is required to be proactive to develop quality related control methodologies and systems such as Cost of Quality control company-wide. Encourage the implementation of the established systems. Analyze and solve problems occurring during implementation. 

This position is also required to actively support 5S/Lean Manufacturing/Class A and SAP and on going support, to help area owners set up goals and integrate 5S/Lean Manufacturing Practices with Internal Quality Certification system through standardization and documentation.

This person reports to a Quality Manager or a Quality Supervisor and works with supervisors, technicians and other support groups.
Typical internal customers include various contacts throughout Caterpillar worldwide and its subsidiaries.  External contacts include various customers and vendors throughout worldwide markets.    The position is challenged to quickly and correctly identify problems which may not be obvious.  The incumbent solves problems by determining the best course of action, within departmental guidelines, from many existing solutions.  The incumbent is free to determine the best way to complete job assignments in order to achieve desired results.  Work is reviewed after completion, except in the most complex or high impact situations.  Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Vendor Certification, Internal Quality Certification, ISO 9000 Certification, etc.  The position meets or exceeds quality standard set for the measure(s) stated. 


1 A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Manufacturing with an excellent understanding of quality management practices or equivalent experience.

2 Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment, or in the quality field is desired.  

3Minimum four to six years of experience and requires a thorough knowledge of quality concepts including process control, analysis, Caterpillar internal certification principals, and ISO9000 etc.  

4 Requires strong communication, cooperation and influence skills to work with all levels of employees and customers, especially with leadership management employees.  

5Requires quality tools knowledge and to be able to teach manufacturing/office employees how to properly apply quality tools or techniques.  

6 Advanced computer applications, good oral and written communications skills are a must.
