This position will provide invaluable inventory and cost analysis and support to the business. The incumbent will utilize accounting expertise in the inventory closing cycle, as well as provide cost accounting functions to support business processes and provide further experience with Caterpillar accounting practices.

Job duties include but are not limited to the following:

The Inventory and Cost Accountant (internally known as Staff Accountant II Legal Entity ) will provide technical expertise and will perform more complex accounting work that supports business processes. Additionally, this position will:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Caterpillar’s business and accounting practices, systems and procedures
  • Apply accounting knowledge and provide guidance on accounting issues
  • Participate on and lead teams

Incumbent is exposed to a variety of accounting functions and accomplish a high level of complex and/or technical analysis, review various outputs for reasonableness and advise other accountants. Incumbent works on challenging, medium to high risk issues and makes business decisions and recommendations as appropriate. Work is supported by a supervisor primarily through review of results.

Areas of responsibility are varied, including:

  • Responsible for monthly and quarterly closing cycle for inventory, including presentation of commentary and explanation of results to management
  • Financial accounting including preparation of journal entries, financial statements, variance analysis, and account reconciliations
  • Collaboration with supply chain, warehouse and other management to ensure inventory accuracy and financial reporting
  • Serve as trusted advisor for inventory Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) control documentation
  • Lead a multi-functional team for annual Standard Cost Revision for global facilities
  • Works closely with business unit management in preparation of annual business plan and quarterly updates
  • Provides business support to management, invaluable for decision making

The Inventory and Cost Accountant provides guidance to multiple functional areas and levels of authority and is capable of handling complex accounting issues such as methodology changes, reorganization, and accounting standards.

Incumbent will demonstrate knowledge and ability to independently handle accounting issues. They will demonstrate very good communication skills and have a comprehensive knowledge of their business unit products, suppliers, customers, and accounting processes.

Basic Requirements:

  • 4-year degree in accounting or finance OR any 4-year degree with an accounting certification (CPA/CMA)
  • 3-5 years of accounting experience

  • Location:  Peoria, IL area (hybrid)
  • Domestic relocation is available for those who qualify

Plus if Candidates Also Have:

  • Strong background in accounting; including financial and managerial accounting/cost accounting, inventory accounting, reporting and analysis, budget development and explanation of results against expectations
  • Proven record of strong initiative, leadership, accountability and effective communication skills
  • SAP experience
