To manage global Caterpillar manufacturing plant and purchased finished (PF) supplier base, including Expanded Mining (former Bucyrus), performance levels through a staff of supervisors and technical staff to ensure service parts arrive into the global Caterpillar parts distribution network as designed and scheduled to meet corporate fill rate and inventory turns targets.  Additionally responsible for managing Caterpillar’s $500+M Direct Ship business which links dealer orders directly to global suppliers for shipment and invoicing, all aspects of the global Bill of Distribution to ensure systems direct material to the correct global entry point and to drive change through PFEP (Requirements Planning Parameters) activities, which reduce inventory and waste in packaging and transportation.

JOB DUTIES:   This position manages performance of all global service parts suppliers for the Caterpillar Parts business including Cat and former Bucyrus products.  Reporting directly to this position are Inventory Management Managers, Inventory Management Supervisors and Distribution Research Consultants (along with Black Belts or senior consultants as projects warranted).

Manage the entire Aftermarket Parts value stream from point of supply through to delivery to packaging/receiving operations.   This position is the primary interface to senior leaders in Global Purchasing and all Cat manufacturing plants to ensure quality, delivery performance and capacity planning are proactively planned and problems addressed when needed.  Aftermarket Parts availability is a major hallmark of the Caterpillar brand and a major source of revenue and profit for the enterprise, and this role is key to ensuring parts arrive as planned from the supply base and are available for sale.

Provide guidance to Cat Parts consultants, project leaders, general managers, operations managers, Global Purchasing, office of CPS, Caterpillar Manufacturing and external PF supplier middle, upper, and executive level management on aftermarket supply strategies, areas for collaboration, Plan for Every Part (PFEP) architecture, monthly performance and areas of needed improvement.  Architects and directs all supply integration activities for new Cat M&A entities.  Direct Long-Term Forecasting (LTF) and S&OP planning for Parts demand impact on Cat plants.   

Through division supervisory staff, direct collaboration activities across all global Caterpillar manufacturing plants and all PF suppliers to achieve stated Supplier Shipping Performance (SSP) levels, which is a key Group President scorecard metric.  Ensure on-time delivery and reduce past due schedules to enable Caterpillar to have world-class parts availability and minimizes safety stock in the network, freeing capital for other investments.  Lead interface to Global Purchasing to ensure quality improvement is driven through the supply base.  Functions include daily supplier interaction on schedule changes, difficulty attaining schedules, capacity and/or raw material procurement or other problems that may require purchase order changes.  Includes NPI start-ups, providing new product support, coordinating on-going projects, exercising linkages to supplier IM systems, working with client sources of supply, coordinating changes to forecast activity levels, and monitoring and reporting of all functions, including monthly reporting and call to action across all Caterpillar manufacturing and supply Officers. 

Provide leadership and establish strategy through staff to lead teams in achieving specific objectives related to customer service/inventory management-such as expediting customer and dealer emergency orders, or improving fill rate on new model parts. 

Must work with and be able to persuade senior leaders including Materials Directors at major plants/sources of supply, Inventory Control Managers, Systems Managers, Sales Managers, Caterpillar Plant and Global Purchasing Senior Management, as well as managers throughout PD&L.

The Global Parts Supply General Manager is also responsible for managing Caterpillar’s $500+M Direct Ship business which links dealer orders directly to global suppliers for shipment and invoicing, all aspects of the global Bill of Distribution to ensure systems direct material to the correct global entry point and to drive change through PFEP activities, which reduce inventory and waste in packaging and transportation.  Manage the linkage of transportation Freight Order Management (FOM) activities to supplier schedules, reducing Cat transportation costs and minimizing setup and quality problems at inbound processing centers.  These activities are critical to ensuring stable parts inventory worldwide and achieving high levels of service parts availability, which directly impact dealer and end customer satisfaction with Caterpillar product support.

Support division strategy to expand capability of the supply base to support Caterpillars’ extensive supply chains and growth plans and supports technology development to meet the needs of these industries.  This role must deliver high quality on-time implementations for M&A activities.  Develop and administer division budgets.  Recruit, develop and motivate staff.  Review and approve contract language related to common goals agreements.  Recommend staffing required to support new business and coordinate synergies through the Global Supply Chain Council. 


Typically requires an advanced college degree in engineering, math or related field or extensive parts distribution and/or logistics related experience, including staff and supervisory assignments.  A background in marketing, inventory management and control, purchasing, parts distribution plus strong analytical skills are desired.  In addition, at least 15 years of progressively responsible job-related experience are typically required.  Excellent interpersonal skills are required to deal with sensitive issues, develop others, or persuade others inside and outside the department to take specific actions. Incumbent must have good human relations and communication skills and strong computer systems knowledge.
