Job Description:

This role resides within Caterpillar’s Resource Industries Electrification organization.  It will lead the provision of end-to-end energy systems for mining and quarry end-markets.  It will define the infrastructure to power electrified Caterpillar machines to help customers achieve their sustainability goals, particularly greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

As an Energy Systems Product Application Specialist, you will consult with customers, dealers, and industry partners as a recognized expert in the power industry for mines and quarries. This requires a broad understanding of electric power generation, distribution, management, and transfer on challenging and potential remote field sites around the globe.  The role leverages outstanding electrical power application or product knowledge to improve Caterpillar site energy solutions, increase customer loyalty, and improve sales force effectiveness. This is an assignment for an experienced, individual contributor where assignments are complex, challenging and lend themselves to strategic decisions. 

Job Duties / Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Customer Solution Support: Deliver business plan achievement by providing product application expertise into solution design and solution selling. Customer consultation will be provided including application, production, and cost studies to improve value recognition from Caterpillar products. Ability to use industry and proprietary tools to model, understand, and solve technical and economic challenges.  Consultation may include training of customer personnel in areas of expertise mentioned, or coordination of formal training, such as operator or service maintenance training. As a result, customers will recognize the maximum value in designed product features.

  • Customer Understanding: Lead increased application expertise by identifying and documenting use cases/job profiles and designing value propositions based on field observation working with customers. Solution Definition will include high level system design/configuration, job parameters and measures of success, and value chain definition.  It further requires the ability to capture and synthesize voice of the customer into critical customer and business requirements to guide product definition.

  • Knowledge Transfer: Increase Caterpillar mining and electric power regional and dealer sales force knowledge of Caterpillar Products and their application. Lead regional participation in global sales training, develop sales training programs, and deliver sales training regionally. Training content will include traditional product comparisons as well as modules on application training specific to industry segments.

  • Individuals in this position must understand and keep current on customer/dealer market and needs and understand how and why decisions are made within their work group and organization. They are responsible for applying those decisions to support and develop product sales, Caterpillar region and dealer effectiveness, overall segment growth, New Product Introduction process, process improvement, sales management process improvement, etc. Incumbents apply their knowledge of products, technology, industry, etc., in support of Caterpillar, dealer and customer expectations and needs and contribute to strategic planning. Incumbents may provide direction to less experienced personnel.

  • Incumbents, along with their manager, will direct their development and continual learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes. Key learning comes from continued experience in the assigned industry, enhancing communication and people relationship skills, improving problem solving and analysis ability, building and using business skills, enhancing use of Caterpillar systems, and developing leadership abilities. Incumbents must stay abreast of industry and technology changes and relate those changes to Caterpillar, dealer, and customer needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum or comparable college education

  • 8+ years of experience in electric power for field industries (mining, oil & gas, quarry, construction)

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Expert knowledge of electrical power products including on-site renewable energy sources, microgrids, energy storage systems (batteries, hydrogen, etc.), switchgear, relays, interconnects, power transmission, power conversion systems, substations, transformers, and/or high-power charging systems.

  • Ability to conduct high level system design for safe, reliable, efficient, and clean electrical power distribution, management, and transfer to mobile machines.

  • Deep understanding of product applications, the engineering, and economics of required sub-systems, and the full customer energy value stream

  • Mining industry experience is preferred, with established relationships with key customers and suppliers.

  • Familiarity with regulations and certifications safety and compliance in key global markets (from high voltage AC to high and low voltage DC).

  • Ability to coordinate other business units and external partners/suppliers in definition, development, and delivery of products and services required to achieve customer value through Caterpillar’s differentiate site solutions.

  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve, taking initiative to organize and lead projects to achieve strategic objectives.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to work with global team and global customers with sensitivities to different language and cultures.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver large scale, complex assignments.
