This position manages the development and definition of strategic and operational business initiatives involving primarily strategic value chain performance for the segment portfolio including VPs, GP, and other business partners.

The primary responsibility of the Strategic Business Planning Manager is to provide analysis, counsel and advice to administrative and executive leaders for resolving complex segment business issues related primarily to strategic value chain performance that have a direct impact on the corporation and long-term results of operations. Analyzes Business Unit market situation and strategic intent and defines the issues and opportunities for growth in alignment with the Enterprise Strategic profile. Analyzes problems and develops solutions for resolving strategic segment issues as well as refocusing the individual business direction and developing strategies that involve the Executive Offices, multiple Profit Centers, Service Divisions, Marketing Profit Centers, dealers and strategic Suppliers.

The Strategic Business Planning Manager analyzes previous and newly created Business Unit strategic business plans, researches industries, markets and competitive information, gathers customer input, combines in-depth business knowledge to produce scenarios or alternatives and creates strategic segment or business unit recommendations such as changing product mix, pursuing new businesses, or markets segments via acquisition or joint venture. Develops criteria and list of potential acquisition, JV or business relationship targets, subsequently presenting recommendations to administrative or executive office.

This position competes with major international consulting or investment banking firms for Caterpillar, dealers and major supplier business. This requires a significant knowledge of Caterpillar Inc. including the organization, associated accountabilities, product mix and line, market segments, customers and competitors along with a willingness to travel for both domestic and international business opportunities. Position requires a balanced combination of analytical, strategic and relationship skills to effectively drive investment decisions for profitable long-term enterprise growth within a complex matrix organization.

Employee may also be responsible for performing other job duties occasionally as assigned.

Moderate travel required (10% - 15% of working time).

Basic Requirements:

  • Requires a college degree (preferably an advanced Business degree) in Finance, Accounting, Marketing , Business Administration, Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of managerial experience on Staff/Supervisory positions in various functional areas (preferably including black belt positions) to gain a broad business prospective in working with senior level management and related business issues.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Demonstrated decision making capabilities due to impact of recommendations on results of operations, knowledge of company policies, practices and organizational structure along with good human relations and communications skills.
  • Skills or knowledge of segment specific industries
  • Skills or knowledge in applying standard strategy frameworks for problem solving
