Job Description:

The Lead Software Engineer contributes to vital readiness of Caterpillar’s state-of-the-art digital platform.  This position will support a world class platform to host a wide range of digital applications.

The Lead Software Engineer will lead a team of software engineers to provide world class software support focused specifically on the backend Telematics software services in the Helios Platform. Daily, you will manage your team’s work in triaging and resolving tickets through use of architecture diagrams, runbooks, and code.  For the success of your team, guiding and mentoring engineers to understanding advanced code and architecture integration points is a must.  Throughout the week, you will work closely with technical leads of peer software engineering Scrum teams to enable your team to develop and deploy bug fixes on their behalf so consumers have timely issue resolution.  You will also help your team educate users on telematics data flow and system behaviors.  Additionally, you will define and architect utilities and tools to assist your team in troubleshooting easier and faster, develop insightful dashboards and reports to manage and communicate your team’s velocity, and build up a technical knowledge base that can be referenced by platform software engineering teams, testing teams, and application teams.

This is a new engineering team, so you play a vital role in shaping, building and organizing this team in close collaboration with the Software Engineering Manager.  The Lead Software Engineer will need to establish and build healthy relationships with Service Owners, Technical Leads, Architects, Test Teams, and Application Teams to foster a collaborative work environment.  This role will also mentor and coach junior software engineers in reading and understanding advanced Java, SQL, and other necessary languages to triage at the code level and develop tools used by this team.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Competent to perform all programming, project management, and development assignments without close supervision; normally assigned the more complex aspects of systems work.
  • Acts as team leader for development and support groups; provides programming and application/technical leadership, guidance, and assistance to other team members.
  • Works directly on complex application/technical problem identification and resolution, including responding to off-shift and weekend support calls.
  • Works independently on complex systems or infrastructure components that may be used by one or more applications or systems.
  • Drives application development focused around delivering business valuable features
  • Mentor and assist software engineers, providing technical assistance and direction as needed
  • Maintains high standards of software quality within the team by establishing good practices and habits
  • Identifies and encourage areas for growth and improvement within the team
  • Guide the team to develop a structured application/interface code, new program documentation, operations documentation and user guides in a casual, flexible environment
  • Communicate with end users and internal customers to help direct development, debugging, and testing of application software for accuracy, integrity, interoperability, and completeness
  • Lead development of new functionality and applications on cross-functional Agile project teams
  • Performs integrated testing and customer acceptance testing of components that requires careful planning and execution to ensure timely, quality results.
  • Employee is also responsible for performing other job duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time to time.

Basic qualifications:

  • Position requires a four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Eight years or more of software development experience or at least five years of experience with master’s degree in computer science or related field.
  • Eight years or more of experience in designing and developing software applications in Java or at least five years of experience in Java or Scala with master’s degree in computer science or related field.

Top candidates will also have:

  • Successful track record leading a team of software engineers
  • Proven experience in many of the following,
    • Designing, developing, deploying and maintaining software at scale.
    • Batch or stream processing systems such as AWS Kinesis Data Streams, Apache Spark, Flink, Akka, Storm
    • Message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, AWS SNS, Apache ActiveMQ, Kinesis.
    • Datastores such as MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, Elasticsearch, MySQL, Oracle.
    • Developing software applications using relational and NoSQL databases.
    • Application architectural patterns, such as MVC, Microservices, Event-driven, etc.
    • Deploying software using CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GoCD, Azure Devops etc.
    • At least three plus years of deploying and maintaining software using public clouds such as AWS or Azure.
    • Working within an Agile framework (ideally Scrum).
    • Debugging and maintaining software in Linux or Unix platforms.
    • Hands one experience with API tools such as Swagger, Postman and Assertible
    • Test driven development and behavior driven development.
    • Hands on experience with testing tools such as Selenium and Cucumber and their integration into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints.
  • Passion for technology and an eagerness to contribute to a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership on medium to large-scale projects impacting strategic priorities.
