Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY:  
Provide leadership to Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation (CFSC), external reporting function. This includes managing the preparation of CFSC’s consolidated U.S. GAAP financial statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Caterpillar Financial Products Division (FPD) input into the Caterpillar external reporting process. Additionally, this position will be knowledgeable of emerging SEC guidance and new and proposed U.S. GAAP accounting standards to evaluate potential disclosure implications to the consolidated CFSC financial statements. This position will collaborate with the CFSC business units and the Caterpillar Corporate accounting team and will function as a senior business resource and support provider.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  A wide variety of responsibilities may exist within the various Accounting units.  Responsibilities vary, but may include one or more of the following duties:
1.    Manages the preparation and issuance of CFSC’s consolidated financial statements in accordance with US GAAP and SEC regulations (Form 10-Q and Form 10-K). This includes preparation of all footnote disclosures, management’s discussion and analysis and the application of XBRL. Ensures formats are compatible and the deadlines are met according to Caterpillar Inc. established formats and deadlines.
2.    Works closely with CFSC external auditors on annual audits, comfort letters and the application of new accounting guidance.
3.    Provides accounting controls and procedures to safeguard the company’s assets through the development of documented policies and procedures in order to deter fraud and misrepresentation.
4.    Ensures the proper treatments for transactions of the international subsidiaries and assists subsidiary finance managers in setting up accounting procedures for new business activities.
5.    Provides leadership for implementing new financial accounting standards as they apply to CFSC and in setting up new accounting procedures for new business activities.
6.    Makes recommendations for changes in policies and procedures to improve or correct accounting related problems and processes.
7.    Participates in the development and support of business strategies.
8.    Serves as liaison between customer, team and data providers and manages customer relationships.
9.    Directs work on more comprehensive, diverse activities that require interpreting and adhering to US GAAP and Caterpillar accounting practices and procedures.
10.    Provides technical guidance and expertise on business issues of global impact and/or high complexity.
11.    Provides creative solutions that challenge traditional methods and processes.
12.    Ensures internal and external customer expectations are met.
13.    Ensures staffing needs are adequate.   Fosters individual development and provides supervision to direct reports.
14.    Ensures accounting requirements are met through third party service provider for certain non-US subsidiaries.  Provides training and guidelines to the provider as needed.
15.    Recommends and maintains accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
16.    Provides accounting counsel and support on complex transactions, funding, new products, and programs.
17.    Ensures information generated by systems used to prepare financial statements is accurate and timely.  
18.    Participates in accomplishment of continuous improvement objectives for the department.  Progress toward accomplishment of these is measured through maintenance of necessary measurements and analysis of associated data.  Participates in the identification of problem areas and development of resolutions to address them.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE:

1.     Thorough knowledge of and advanced ability to apply US GAAP and Caterpillar Inc. procedures.
2.     Advanced knowledge of lease, hedge and foreign currency accounting.
3.     Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and methods, internal control procedures, and financial analysis.
4.     Advanced knowledge of and the proven ability to interpret various SEC and US GAAP regulations and recommend adjustments when changes occur.
5.     Advanced knowledge of and the advanced ability to provide accurate and timely financial reporting for CFSC and FPD, internally and externally.
6.     Advanced knowledge of and the proven ability to provide accurate and timely information regarding various financial activities to CFSC, Caterpillar Inc., and outside government agencies.
7.     Advanced knowledge of and the ability to maintain procedures and controls to protect the assets of the company.
8.     Advanced knowledge of and ability to apply math computation skills including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as statistics and other mathematical concepts used in modeling.
9.     Advanced knowledge of and ability to use the software packages associated with CFSC accounting.
10.     Strong decision-making and analytical skills and ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously, with minimal involvement from management.
11.     Strong interpersonal skills to develop staff and persuade others to take action.
12.     Proven ability to foster high quality standards driven by company objectives and a strong motivation for continuous improvement of CFSC.
13.     Proven ability to maintain an environment conducive to collaboration across business units and job functions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  

A 4-year college or university degree in accounting or a relevant business discipline and a minimum of 10 years progressive exempt experience in, and a thorough knowledge of the financial accounting activities of a multinational finance company are recommended.  Experience in SEC reporting, technical accounting research and application and supervision and leadership is recommended.  CPA/CMA is strongly preferred.
