As an Engineering Specialist - Configurator Systems Integration in our Decatur, IL facility, you will play a critical role in shaping some of the largest, most advanced mining equipment on the planet. This position sits at the heart of our Resource Industries Operations and Products Division, supporting Large Wheel Loaders, Wheel Dozers, and Compactors while serving as a Technical/Engineering Lead for flagship mining platforms like the 992/854 and 990/844.

In this highly visible leadership role, you’ll drive the design, development, and integration of complex engineering solutions that define product excellence while delivering superior performance, durability, and quality compared to the competition. You’ll lead high-impact initiatives that balance innovation with cost, manufacturability, velocity, and serviceability, ensuring unmatched customer value. What You’ll Do

  • Develop and deliver solutions to complex engineering challenges, leading or supporting the design and improvement of advanced systems aligned with product line strategy.

  • Apply customer and market insights to engineering decisions, including product application, competitive benchmarking, and cost driver analysis.

  • Maintain and expand technical expertise by staying current on emerging technologies and deepening knowledge across relevant engineering disciplines.

  • Design and develop new products while contributing to overall product line strategy and long-term roadmap.

  • Define product architecture and strategy, including program scope, machine configuration, and modularity approaches.

  • Evaluate and benchmark new and existing products against competitive offerings and performance requirements.

  • Communicate technical concepts effectively across customers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to engineers, leaders, and business partners across the product development lifecycle.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience desired.

What skills you will have:

  • Business Process Improvement: Applies BPI methodologies to identify inefficiencies, define processes, and support implementation of streamlined, more effective business operations.

  • Planning (Tactical, Strategic): Contributes to operational and tactical planning by tracking progress, adapting to changes, and ensuring alignment with short- and mid-term business objectives.

  • Quality Management: Supports quality objectives by applying continuous improvement principles, adhering to standards, and utilizing quality tools to evaluate and enhance outcomes.

  • Analytical Thinking: Leverages advanced analytical techniques to identify root causes, evaluate risks and trade-offs, and develop data-driven solutions to complex problems.

  • Effective Communications: Communicates clearly and professionally through written and verbal channels, delivering feedback, adapting messaging, and interpreting both verbal and non-verbal cues.

  • Problem Solving: Identifies, analyzes, and resolves issues using structured problem-solving methods, balancing stakeholder perspectives and evaluating solution alternatives.

  • Systems Thinking: Analyzes interdependencies within systems to diagnose root causes, optimize performance, and implement solutions that align resources to business outcomes.

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Experience in heavy equipment, mining equipment, or complex manufacturing industries

  • Proven experience in systems integration engineering, configuration engineering, or complex product development environments

  • Strong understanding of system architecture, system interdependencies, and integration methodologies (Systems Thinking)

  • Hands-on experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and product configuration platforms

  • Working knowledge of quality management systems (QMS) and continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.)

  • Experience with prototyping, system testing, validation, and verification processes to ensure product quality and reliability

Summary Pay Range:

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
